MECHANICAL SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN III

JOB DESCRIPTION 


POSITION SUMMARY:

Under minimal guidance; plans, lays’ out, fabricates, installs, assembles, repairs, operates, tests and troubleshoots systems on VIP aircraft in accordance with technical manuals, engineering drawings, and FAA 

regulations and assumes a leadership role by providing routine instructions on work tasks, blueprints and OJT for junior level technicians.

Systems to include oxygen, environmental control, ventilation, smoke detection, equipment cooling, potable water, gray water and waste water systems.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Read, interpret and understand blueprints and other documents to accurately determine and plan the 

work steps to be performed.

2. Fabricate and install systems parts and assemblies per engineering drawing or structural repair manual.

3. Perform the operations of testing and troubleshooting aircraft systems utilizing an educational level of knowledge, skills and understanding about integrated systems.

4. Anticipate, specify, develop, implement, and maintain tools (including test automation tools) used on aircraft systems.

5. Provides OJT and guidance to junior level technicians.

6. Work directly with Engineering to help facilitate installs.

7. Observes company rules and regulations, including housekeeping and proper use of safety methods and the safe operation of equipment.

8. Adheres to all recordkeeping requirements and paperwork to ensure work is performed in accordance with stated documents. 

9. Complete all sign off’s and component removal/installation sheets at time task is performed but prior to end of shift.

10. Utilize all resources available to accurately perform the work steps in a safe and timely manner.

11. Ensure a tidy, safe and productive work environment which is conducive to properly performing the tasks at hand.

12. Other duties as assigned not specifically stated herein.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES, ETC:

1. High school diploma or GED, plus a technical training/diploma/certificate in aircraft mechanics, or aeronautics from at least a 2 year technology institution plus 3 years of applicable experience in the 

same or similar job in the military or within the aviation industry.

2. A&P preferred, but not required. 

3. Prefer to have 2 -5 years of STC experience Final 03/2020

4. Or 6 years of applicable experience guiding junior technicians, working directly with other departments, reading blueprints, fabricating and installing systems parts and assemblies, and troubleshooting and 

testing aircraft systems in the same or similar job in the military or within the aviation industry.

5. Early sheet metal experience a plus.

6. Minor composite repair with wet layout.

7. Ability to install rivets.

8. Basic understanding of gray water/ potable water/ vacuum waste systems.

9. Basic understanding of air condition duct systems with the ability to modify existing tubes and hoses to meet blue print specs.

10. Basic ability to swedge hard lines and ability to perform burst and proof testing.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Strong ability to provide verbal and written communication.

2. Proficiently able to read, interpret and understand blueprints.

3. Must be self starting and motivated with the desire to learn

4. Proficient ability to apply the use of routine to complex mathematical problems to solve work issues.

5. Demonstrated ability to comprehend and retain OJT.

6. Must possess a proficient mechanical aptitude.

7. Must have the ability to read measuring devices such as a scale or caliper or other required tools.

8. Must have close tolerance experience.

9. Ability to use basic shop equipment (drill press, band saw, sander, etc.).

10. Ability to use basic hand tools (grinder, drill motor, wrenches, etc.).

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The work environment described here is representative of those required by an employee to perform the 

essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodations.

The hangar where this position works is in an environment which may have exposure to excessive noise or 

adverse environmental issues such as fluctuations in temperature. The employee in this position will experience 

occasional outdoor exposure to heat, cold, and environmental elements.
