Seasonal Lead Summer Camp Counselor, Polk County

Under the supervision of the Youth and Family Program Director and Summer Camp coordinators, a Lead Camp Counselor provides direction for the program and classroom, and implements program curriculum. Provides a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on the YMCA values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring, while putting the quality and safety of our program at the utmost of importance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Operates in ratio of age group assigned and fulfills all of the responsibilities of a counselor, assist with scheduling, assist in planning daily activities 

2. Leading swim lessons for non-swimmers during swim times (assistance given when needed based on ratios).

3. Attends all in-service trainings and meetings organized by the camp coordinator and Youth and Family Programs Director.

5. Helps plan components of camp

6. Is a role model for Y policies and practices

7. Helps perform specific duties on field trips such as bus head counts, checking the field trip in with the destination, carrying camper medication and others as needed

8. Other duties as needed and assigned by Camp Coordinators and Youth and Family Programs Director.

9. Comfortable communicating with parents

10. Must be able to open or close daily. Coordinates this with camp coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Experience working in childcare

2.    Minimum age requirements may apply; for example, minimum age of 18

3.    CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date

4.      Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.

5.      Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Ability to plan, lead and participate in activities.

2. Run, jump, lift, carry, push, as well as any other physical actions that are needed.

Time Commitment:

1.   The Lead Camp Counselor will receive 6 vacation days that can be used during summer camp. Lead Camp Counselor may not use vacation time for the first or last week of summer camp.  Cannot be taken same time as Camp Coordinator.  

2.    Must be able to attend ALL Lead Counselor training & training dates for camp counselors.

3.    Must be able to attend association camp training and run parts of training if needed.
