Overview of the Position

Reporting to the EVP, External Relations, the Vice President (VP), Communications will be responsible for the development of Roosevelt’s communications strategy. The VP, Communications will develop a world-class communications plan for Roosevelt, directly managing communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the Roosevelt's, mission brand, and reputation. The VP, Communications will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership. This individual will be an ambassador for the organization and will need to build relationships with the media. The goal is to advance the organization's position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. The VP of Communications will be responsible for Roosevelt’s varied and integrated communications products and services including print publications; web, e-news, and other online communications; media and public relations.

The Vice President (VP) of Communications leads and manages the Roosevelt’s Communications team, a group of professionals specializing in messaging, media relations, PR writing (e.g., development support), digital strategy and social media, publishing (e.g., white papers, policy notes, etc.), multimedia project support, and advocacy support.

Roles and Responsibilities 

  • Create an integrated strategic communications plan (including a comprehensive digital strategy) to advance the organization's objectives. 
  • Work with other senior managers, staff, and fellows to plan for maximum impact around organizational priorities. 
  • Collaborate with program staff and development leadership to craft and promote compelling stories that leverage opportunities presented by the news cycle, with partners, and in the advocacy world. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media influencers. 
  • Develop and help implement media outreach strategies for Roosevelt work products; create new media opportunities and placements to build the profile of the CEO/President, key staff, student leaders, and fellows; and serve as a spokesperson if needed. 
  • Develop, refine, and amplify all messaging. 
  • Develop and maintain the organization's brand. 
  • Recruit and engage with outside vendors where necessary (e.g. web, design, branding, multimedia production).
  • Create strategic communications-related partnerships with allied organizations and media outlets 
  • Consult with Network staff and members to (1) identify and create opportunities for local media coverage and outreach and (2) leverage the reach of the Network to deploy creative tactics to influence policy and increase brand awareness. 
  • Provide ongoing analysis of Roosevelt’s communications impact, utilizing algorithmic and other measures and suggesting revisions to strategy as needed.

7+ Years experience leading and managing a diverse, collaborative communications team within a political, policy, and/or advocacy campaigns context, with demonstrated impact.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree strongly preferred.
  • Excellent project management skills, including projects with external vendors (e.g. design, web, branding); proven ability to juggle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously – doing and delegating – while delivering products on deadline. 
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills. 
  • Messaging and branding expertise. 
  • Demonstrated experience and success in pitching media; building relationships in media; strong familiarity/ relationships with NY, D.C., and national press a plus. 
  • Experience with print publications, website creation/management, email outreach, and social media platforms (proven track record of successfully implementing creative approaches to media and digital engagement strategy a plus).

Strong people skills; can work well with a variety of stakeholders and is naturally inclined towards a problem-solving orientation to challenges

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and evolve to unique opportunities to expand an organization’s reach. 
  • Experience collaborating with teams across an organization to develop and implement successful communication strategies. 
  • Proven ability to harness, strategize around, and report on metrics. 
  • Skilled at communicating strategy to colleagues and stakeholders.
