Texas Hearing Institute

 The nationally renowned Texas Hearing Institute, formerly known as The Center for Hearing and Speech, is the most comprehensive resource for pediatric hearing loss in Texas and the only facility in the region that offers health services and spoken language education for children with hearing loss – all under one roof. Children from more than 44 counties and all socioeconomic levels come to Texas Hearing Institute, where no child is turned away, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.  Texas Hearing Institute offers a wide range of services and programs that enable children with hearing loss to gain listening, speaking, and literacy skills to communicate verbally with their families and the community.

Audiologist Job Responsibilities

·         The clinical audiologist is responsible for evaluating hearing in children birth to twenty-one years of age. Should the child have a hearing loss, they will aggressively manage their loss for the development of speech and language, as well as academic success. Pediatric audiologists at THI collaborate closely with the MWS Listening and Spoken Language Pre-School, as well as the Speech Therapy Clinic. 

·         Provide audiologic services (assessment and management) to a pediatric population.

·         Complete age-appropriate diagnostic audiological evaluations, including tympanometry, acoustic reflex testing and otoacoustic emissions   

·         Complete electrophysiologic testing (Sedated and Non-Sedated ABR)

·         Complete hearing aid evaluations, hearing aid fittings, as well as hearing aid troubleshooting and minor repairs. 

·         Knowledge of cochlear implant and bone anchored hearing devices available; provide appropriate recommendations         

·         Working knowledge of speech acoustics as it relates to spoken language development

·         Complete cochlear implant candidacy assessments.

·         Complete FM system selection, fitting, and troubleshooting

·         Provide education to parents, teachers, and other professionals working with children with hearing impairments.

·         Participate in the development of evidence based protocols and guidelines

·         Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation.           

Physical Demands: 

Stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; talk; hear; able to lift 15 pounds; able to endure outdoor temperatures for camp supervision or special events. 

Qualifications and Experience:

·         A Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.) is required from an accredited college or university.

·         Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) in Audiology and/or Board Certification from the American Academy of Audiology

·         Texas License

·         3 Years of pediatric audiology experience

·         Flu vaccination required; provided by THI at no cost to employees

·         Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is required for all employees unless approved for a medical or religious exemption

Travel: 

  • Must be able to travel to attend hearing screenings, trainings and/or other events as required to acquire and maintain proficiency in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.
