Store & Reception Assistant - Temporary Full Time

35 hours per week, 8 week term

Reporting to the Manager of Adoptions, the Store and Reception Assistant is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to all visitors to CHS. 

General Duties:

  • Provide excellent customer service to visitors, donors, adopters, volunteers, and patrons while greeting them warmly and professionally 
  • Champion CHS values of courage, collaboration, compassion, and commitment in your everyday work
  • Maintain a culture of positivity and openness through face to face communication
  • Promote a culture of volunteer engagement by building and maintaining relationships with volunteers, participating in volunteer recognition including monthly and annual volunteer awards, and teamwork
  • Provide support to Volunteers and Foster Parents when needed
  • Provide patrons with information on CHS programs and initiatives including special events, volunteering, animals available for adoption, as well as directions to public areas 
  • Assist all areas of Support Services with closing duties including cleaning, feeding, animal handling, and administration
  • Provide information about products for sale at the Pet Gear Store and perform the following store duties: Fit harnesses, collars, crates, and other accessories; Ring in purchases, donations, and membership fees; Provide information to customers over the phone and via email; Restock store items as needed; Merchandising, ensuring the store looks neat and appealing; End of day transaction balancing 
  • Provide reception coverage and support as follows: Greet customers, volunteers, and patrons, warmly and professionally; Provide visitors with directions to different areas of the facility ; Provide members of the public with guidance for our adoptable animal rooms; Transfer calls and announce visitors to other team members; Provide information about shelter operations including special events, programs, volunteering, and information on how to adopt an animal; Assist with putting away donations and folding laundry ; Assist with keeping the reception area clean and tidy ; Provide assistance and support to all Volunteers 
  • Assist other departments with various tasks including: Answering general inquires, Scanning, organizing, and filing documents and records; Feeding, cleaning, and enrichment of animals
  • Other duties as assigned 

Skills will be cultivated through hands-on, on-the-job training with a variety of animals and patrons. To establish a foundational understanding, videos covering topics such as animal body language, safe animal handling, and PPE usage will be provided. These skills will be further honed through practical experience and can be applied across different departments at CHS. Youth will expand their knowledge of related fields, including veterinary care, animal behavior, reception, administration, and customer service. This experience will give youth insight into an animal’s journey through the shelter and the varied experiences gained at Calgary Humane Society will serve as a solid foundation for future study or career growth.

Summer Job Requirements: 

Calgary Humane Society summer jobs are subsidized through the Canada Summer Jobs program which offers wage subsidies to support employers to create quality summer work experiences for youth aged 15 to 30 years.

To be eligible for this position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program, candidates must meet the position requirements as well as be:

  • between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible.

Position Requirements: 

  • Minimum high school diploma
  • Minimum of one year of professional or volunteer work experience
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the term of the position
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to approach sensitive and emotional situations using a flexible, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach
  • Genuine interest in the welfare of animals and people and values congruent with the organization
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Dependable, reliable, and dedicated to completing assigned tasks and meeting deadlines while also demonstrating adaptability to changing priorities and work assignments
  • Self-motivated with strong problem-solving and teamwork skills
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Successful candidate will be required to complete a police information check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS
  • Physically capable of, and comfortable handling a variety of species including but not limited to cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and small critters

Hourly Rate:

  • $17.00 + 6% Vacation Pay
