The Pre-Professional Program is a full-time, paid opportunity for early-career musicians to level up their artist business in preparation for the Emerging Artist Program and a career in the music industry. We have roles for singer-songwriters, self-accompanied vocalists, and instrumentalists (including backline performers on bass, drums, keys, guitar, and horns).

 

Over the course of two months in the summer, Pre-Professional Artists will participate in workshops and a variety of skill-building opportunities to improve their understanding of the music industry. They will split their time between performance and training,  building a foundational understanding of the Canadian Music Industry at large.

 

Pre-Professional Program Artist Eligibility:

  • Must have their own portable solo performance setup for in-person performance opportunity (amplification implements optional)

  • Must have minimum of 60 minutes of material suitable for performance in public spaces, and be prepared to engage and entertain the public 

  • Must be prepared to perform for up to 2 hours in length in-person 

  • Must be willing to engage in online performances of up to 60 minutes

Due to federal funding requirements for this program, successful applicants must be:

  • 15–30 years of age on their first day of work

  • A Canadian citizen, have a permanent resident card, or be protected under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act ( There is no requirement to be a student) 

  • Residing in Canada during the length of the employment.

This program pays minimum wage for your province.

Pre-Professional Program Artist Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform music and provide engaging and high-quality entertainment at summer events such as festivals, community celebrations, tourism initiatives, and agricultural fairs taking place in public and quasi-public spaces within municipalities partnered with the Co-op. (Due to COVID-19, the 2022 Pre-Professional Program will be a blended model of in-person and online activities, subject to local health regulations and guidelines. Participants must be prepared to record and perform remotely–either at home or another location arranged by the artist–such that the quality is acceptable for online hosting or streaming).

  • Participate in career-related skill-development programs, workshops, rehearsals and training programs to develop the highest caliber of professional skills and attitudes that will transcend the summer job period.

  • Respond to inquiries and interactions via electronic means (i.e., email, Slack, etc.) in a timely and professional manner.

  • Maintain professional workplace behavior and confidentiality when dealing with workplace challenges.

  • Complete administrative tasks on time and with accuracy, as assigned.

  • Attend functions such as job fairs, networking events, schools, and other approved locations to promote the Co-op, the Summer Emerging Artist/Musicians program objectives.

  • Complete other tasks as assigned.

Pre-Professional Program Work Hours:

  • Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 5pm (PST, EST, AST)

  • Sat-Sun, variable times: 6 hours of in-person or online performance, as scheduled by your Program Coordinator

  • Monday: Full day off, no program activities scheduled for artists

The Pre-Professional Program will be 6-8 weeks in length, commencing in early July and ending near the end of August.

 

Application Requirements:

You must upload your artistic resume and cover letter, and include a professional headshot specific to your artist-business, if you have one.

You must submit a link (in the pre-screening questions) to a YouTube video (2-3 minutes) of yourself performing one or more songs that you feel best represent your musical ability.

  • Original material is preferred.

  • Video must be unedited (i.e., no vocal tuning, audio processing, or video editing of any kind).

  • Links to public performances are permitted as long as they follow these guidelines.

  • We will review a maximum of three minutes of content. You can provide a link that starts at a specified timestamp of your choice.

  • Video may be uploaded as “unlisted” on YouTube if preferred. Please ensure that your video link is NOT private, as the audition jurors will not be able to view it and your application will not be considered.

Note: Bands or ensembles are encouraged to apply, however members must apply and audition individually.

 

*** RETURNING STAFF ***
Pre-Professional Program Artists employed in this role or the Emerging Artist role in any prior seasons are required to add a resume and cover letter detailing their growth since their last season, why they would like to return, and what they hope to get out of the program if selected for 2022. Please keep in mind that you will not necessarily return to the same position that you held last year. 

 

Next Steps:

After the initial application (including the video performance submission), applicants successful at that stage will be invited to participate in a live, but online, ‘Callbacks’ second-round process. Please make sure you are available on the following dates:

  • April 28th, or April 29th, or April 30th

 

Callbacks will consist of a second-round audition, media interview, and a formal panel job interview. All this will take place over Zoom, and each level of assessment will be recorded. Candidates will be required to sign a media release before attending callbacks.

 

The Co-op also offers the Emerging Artist Program, which may better suit musicians with a higher level of skill.

The Emerging Artist (EA) Program is designed to help young Canadian musicians navigate the next level of their career, whether that is a national tour, preparing for export, or any other major stepping stone from the beginner level to the intermediate. We have roles for singer-songwriters, self-accompanied vocalists, and instrumentalists (including backline performers on bass, drums, keys, guitar, and horns).

EAs will get structured training from a variety of industry professionals in navigating the intricacies of the music industry, gaining skills and knowledge crucial for career growth along the way. The primary focus of this program is to provide support for and animate our communities and to build sustainability in our artistic workforce. Hours not spent performing will be occupied with workshops, training, and hands-on activities to prepare EAs for levelling up their business. Some performers may be selected as principal roles in our end-of-summer touring Showcase.

Those who apply for only the Pre-Professional Program will not be considered for the EA program. If you want to be considered for the EA program, please apply under the EA job posting and indicate that you would also like to be considered for the Pre-Professional Program.

To have your application considered by the Jury, all pre-interview questions must be filled out completely. 

Please note that there are no part-time or performance-only positions this year.

Membership is not required to participate in the competition for this position, and no preference is given to existing members in our ranking process, however, upon acceptance of an employment contract, all employees are required to join the co-operative.

Those not selected for the Summer Emerging Artist Program or the Pre-Professional Program (PPP) are still welcome to join The Co-op as members. Professional Creator members have access to the same live or digital resources, support and community as those with that membership level in our programs.
