Summary:
The Patient Care Dialysis Technician position provides chronic hemodialysis treatment for facility (center) dialysis patients in licensed chronic facilities or sub-chronic facilities. This position reports directly to the Dialysis RN Manager or Charge Nurse. 

Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Licenses and Certification:
Dialysis Technician Certification by CMS, approved state certification program, or a national commercially available certification program which is approved by CMS. 
Current CPR certification through American Heart Association 

Experience:

  • Minimum two years of Patient Care Dialysis Technician experience preferred 
  • Certified Patient Care Dialysis Technicians preferred.
  • Certified Nurse Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Phlebotomy certification preferred for non - certified applicants.  Must attain and maintain certification within 18 months of beginning work as a Patient Care Dialysis Technician.
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Word and Outlook. 

Essential Functions:

  • Receives patient into treatment and exam area and performs patient data collection.
  • Records vital signs and all other parameters of dialysis patients as per facility policy or state regulations or both.
  • Obtains blood samples and culture specimens and prepares for shipment.
  • Performs set-up and monitors dialysis machines and reverse osmosis (RO) water system for correct functioning.
  • Responds to visual and audible alarms and makes appropriate adjustments before, during and after the dialysis treatment.
  • Performs safety checks as directed by the registered nurse prior to, during, and following dialysis treatment.
  • Demonstrates ability to prime dialyzers, obtains dialysate, and monitors the delivery system during treatments using all alarm systems, settings, and appropriate tests.
  • Communicates with Dialysis RN Manager/Charge Nurse or Administrator throughout day to plan, confirm, coordinate, and organize assignments.
  • Communicates estimated time of patient treatment with Primary Nurse and other facility staff.
  • Confirms assigned patient’s consent for treatment, treatment orders, presence and patency of vascular access, overall patient condition, and patient availability in advance.
  • Verifies accurate charges and documentation are submitted per facility policy and procedure.
  • Notifies the Dialysis RN Manager/Charge Nurse and Administrator of inventory and equipment needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to review dialysis prescription, notes general physical and mental condition of patient through observation and interview, documents observations.
  • Initiates dialysis via approved accesses using proper cannulation or central venous catheter (CVC) techniques in accordance with state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Demonstrates ability to monitor patient vital signs applicable to critically ill patients, administers fluid therapy or other appropriate treatments as directed, documents activities appropriately.
  • Performs job responsibilities in multiple modalities or functions upon successful completion of required modality specific training.
  • Performs clerical duties as needed which may include filing, lab requisitions, scheduling-appointments, answering phones, ordering supplies, billing, copying, faxing, data entry, maintaining patient charts.
  • Dismantles, cleans, and disinfects dialysis machines and equipment in accordance with facility policy and procedures; performs appropriate end of therapy terminal cleaning and disinfection of the dialysis equipment.
  • Monitors patients and equipment, responds to alarms, and adjusts treatment as needed. Notifies Biomedical Services Technician of any equipment malfunctions and Dialysis RN Manager/Charge Nurse.
  • Acts as a resource or preceptor for team members with less experience.
  • Responds appropriately and aids in emergency situations. Remains on-site as necessary staff for evacuation needs of any patients as set forth by Administrator and Dialysis RN Manager.
  • Complies with Dialysis facility policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and quality.
  • Participates in dialysis daily stand-up meetings, team meetings, and phone/web-based conferences as required.
  • Informs Administrator and Medical Director of all incidents, conditions, problems, counseling regarding teammates, patient care, or facilities.
  • Assists Administrator with and participates in center QAPI meetings and initiatives as requested.
  • Performs On-Call responsibilities as scheduled per Administrator.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Process.
  • Demonstrates ability to assist with providing quality outcomes and tracking of metrics.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide treatments in a safe, therapeutic and cost-effective manner..
