Staff Accountant

The EBCLC Staff Accountant provides accounting, finance, and administration support to key organization functions. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate and timely financial records that meet GAAP standards and internal control procedures. The position requires someone who has solid experience with accounting in a non-profit setting; is comfortable with accounting software, and is excited about the opportunity to contribute to and grow within a dynamic mission-driven organization. The Staff Accountant reports to the Deputy Director of Finance.

 East Bay Community Law Center (EBCLC) is a non-profit legal services organization, the community-based clinical program for U.C. Berkeley Law School, and one of the Bay Area’s largest and most effective systems disrupters. With a dual service and teaching mission, EBCLC is a racial justice organization committed to building a culturally diverse workplace, centered on equity. With about 80 staff, 150 law students a year, and a nearly $10 million annual budget, EBCLC is the largest provider of free legal services in Alameda County, providing multimodal, collaborative, and holistic legal services to over 5,000 clients annually and engaging in legislative and policy advocacy at the state and local level.

 EBCLC prides itself on being a worker-friendly organization and entered into its first collective bargaining agreement with its unionized staff in July 2021. In addition to being unionized, our staff are regularly invited to provide feedback to EBCLC’s leadership, participate in various committees (including hiring committees), and are accustomed to a highly collaborative work environment.


Primary Responsibilities

·         Manage all in-house financial transactions and data entry, including:

o   Maintain the general ledger to be an accurate record of financial transactions, by entering all transactions into the accounting system and documenting transaction details in accordance with GAAP and EBCLC’s internal policies;

o   Process accounts and payroll payables and cash disbursements on a weekly basis, prepare checks for signature, and mail out or distribute payments;

o   Process incoming cash receipts, including coding them appropriately in the internal register;

o   Make weekly bank deposits and maintain files of deposit slips and checks per EBCLC’s internal controls;

o   Reconcile and handle matters related to business credit cards on a monthly basis;

o   Track all restricted funds and code transactions to specific government contracts and foundation grants in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Finance;

o   Support the contract invoicing process by providing transaction ledgers and redacted backup documentation per contract requirements;

o   Reconcile bank and investment statements on a monthly basis, reviewing any issues with the Deputy Director of Finance;

o   Reconcile donation amounts with the Development Team on a monthly basis;

o   Maintain vendor and payee files with the required documentation on a fiscal year basis;

o   Process annual 1099 forms and support other regulatory filings as requested

o   Serve as backup and double-check on semi-monthly payroll processing;

o   Assist with annual audit and tax filings process;

·         Work closely with the Deputy Director of Finance to support and develop EBCLC’s internal finance capacity;

·         Other duties and special projects as assigned by the supervisor.

 Minimum Qualifications

·         Minimum three (3) years experience in accounting or bookkeeping, including at least one year of nonprofit accounting. Proficiency in intermediate accounting functions.

·         Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including formulas and macros.

·         Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); familiarity with Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) guidelines desirable.

·         Exceptional attention to detail, high level of accuracy, and commitment to maintaining internal controls.

·         High standards of accountability and sensitivity to confidential information.

·         Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with various teams, providing the most useful guidance in an enthusiastic and clear manner.

·         Resourceful and innovative with a can-do attitude, a sense of humor, and the ability to work successfully and independently in a fast-paced and growing organization.

 Salary and Benefits

Starting salary for this full-time exempt position is $67,000 - $71,000.

 Workplace Expectations

Due to COVID19, EBCLC employees are primarily working remotely. Given the nature of the position, the Staff Accountant will be expected to work on-site at least one day per week. EBCLC will provide the necessary equipment to fulfill the job responsibilities of working from home.
