GENERAL SUMMARY: 

The mission of Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education is to create opportunities for under-resourced youth of the Greater Philadelphia Region to prosper in life. The intended impact is that participating youth will become Snider student-athletes with age-appropriate social-emotional strengths and skills to succeed and contribute as students, employees, and community members. 

 

The Postsecondary Advisor will serve as a resource for Snider students and their families by presenting various educational and postsecondary opportunities, while providing guidance on how to pursue those respective opportunities. Advisors will work as part of a team to help support students throughout their educational career and attain their future aspirations. A successful candidate will take pride in mentoring Snider students to become productive citizens who pursue higher education and give back to their communities. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Create a resource-rich environment for Snider students and families.
  • Assist with planning and conducting information sessions, campus tours, school fairs, and workshops on relevant topics.
  • Collect and monitor student data including test scores, college application information, FAFSA completion, scholarships applied for, high school/college acceptance and scholarships received
  • Individually advise students and families to ensure educational success.
  • Provide guidance to students as they evaluate postsecondary opportunities of interest, while providing support throughout the application process to those institutions.  
  • Assist students with identifying and applying for scholarships, while completing the financial aid process.
  • Be an essential member of the Snider team, which may include, but is not limited to, planning and supporting activities and events.
  • Occasional travel within the Greater Philadelphia/South Jersey area is required. A flexible work schedule and the ability to occasionally work nights and weekends is required.
  • This is a hybrid role, meaning you will work at both one of our ice rinks and virtually. The ability to work 2-3 evenings per week at one of our ice rinks is required. Preference will be given to those who can work at Laura Sims Skate House, Simons Recreation Center, or Tarken Ice Rink. The rinks we operate out of include: 
    • Class of 1923 Arena (Penn): 3130 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19104
    • Laura Sims Skate House: 210 Cobbs Creek Pkwy, Philadelphia, PA 19139
    • Scanlon Ice Rink: 1099 E. Venango St., Philadelphia, PA 19134
    • Simons Recreation Center: 7200 Woolston Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19138
    • Tarken Ice Rink: 6250 Frontenac St., Philadelphia, PA 19111 
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.  

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) is required; Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
  • Experience working with middle to high school-aged students.
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn about various educational avenues, such as high school. application processes, college admissions policies, financial policies of colleges and universities, trade schools, military, workforce development programs, etc.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of workforce development programs and AmeriCorps is helpful, but not mandatory.
  • Advanced computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Successful applicants must be able to pass the PA Child Abuse Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Background Check, and FBI Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

INTELLECTUAL AND SOCIAL DEMANDS:? 

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits. The position requires constant attention to precise details and specified standards including following simple to complex (more than three steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:? 

While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee constantly operates a computer and other office devices such telephones, copy machines, fax machines, etc. Occasionally moves about inside office space to access storage areas, cabinets, and office machinery. Occasionally local driving in support of work-related projects. Occasional pushing, pulling, lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.? 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:? 

The essential responsibilities of this position are performed indoors, mainly at ice hockey rinks but including occasional visits to the office and special event sites (indoor/outdoor in the weather conditions prevalent at the time). The noise level in the work environments can range from moderate to loud during events/programs and is minimal during non-event/program times. 

 

SCHEDULE:? 

Most work is completed during after school/evening hours. There may also be opportunities to work standard work hours and/or weekend duties in the Greater Philadelphia area. Hours will vary weekly, based on seasonal student needs and requirements. No specific number of hours is guaranteed each pay period.
