Veterinarian
Veterinarian – Full Time (Term Position)
37.5 hours per week| Sunday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Reporting to the Director of Animal Health (Lead Veterinarian) Calgary Humane Society (CHS) Veterinarians work collaboratively with other departments to ensure the health and welfare of the animals residing at the shelter or in foster homes. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with animals of all species and sizes and have strong interpersonal and customer service skills to foster collaborative relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the public.
• Surgery: spay/neuter (dog, cat, rabbit), dentistry, wound repairs, amputations, hernia repair, enucleations, exploratory surgery, etc
• Medical treatment of animals in the shelter including, but not limited to; oversight of routine preventive medical care; examination, assessment and treatment of animals on intake or during their stay in shelter/foster care; triage and treatment of emergencies; infectious disease management; diagnostic interpretation and population rounds
• Assessment and treatment of exotic species; including birds, reptiles and rabbits
• Performing humane euthanasia on a rotating schedule in a compassionate and caring environment
• Determine long term health plans and adoptability of the animals in care ensuring all animals move through the shelter in a timely manner
• Provide expertise as required for animal cruelty and neglect cases which may include court duty as required. Also includes writing clear and concise reports in a timely manner for CHS Peace Officers
• Along with other veterinarians, supervise the Animal Health department staff in day-to-day veterinary clinical activities
• Assist in the provision of detailed assessments when supervising students including UCVM Veterinary students, and interns
• Provide mentoring and support for veterinary students and interns. This includes supervising surgeries and physical examinations as well as oversite of medical decisions, reviewing files and pathway planning
• Respond to Adopters and Foster Parents regarding health issues as well as post-operative follow-up as required
• Provide leadership to staff and volunteers and act as an ambassador for CHS both internally and with external partners and stakeholders
• Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements:
• DVM Degree from accredited university
• Licensed member in good standing with the ABVMA
• Minimum 3 years of experience in veterinary field. Previous shelter medicine experience an asset

• Flexibility to work overtime outside of regularly scheduled hours when required

• Interest in dermatology, exotic animal medicine and surgery, animal behaviour, and willingness to become proficient in relevant areas of veterinary medicine to improve welfare of animals in the care of CHS
• In-depth understanding of animal behavior is an asset
• Organized and detail oriented
• Must be physically capable of lifting/carrying/restraining a minimum of 50lbs
• Constant walking, crouching, squatting, kneeling
• Frequent lifting, carrying, and standing
• Occasional pushing, pulling, sitting, rotating, and climbing
(Occasional: 6-33% of shift, Frequent: 34-67% of shift, Constant: 67-100% of shift)
