The Opportunity

Big Cove YMCA Camp is a residential summer camp for children aged 6–16 located in Sutherlands River, Nova Scotia. Big Cove is the oldest residential camp in Canada, founded by the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth in 1889.  At camp, we believe that our exciting programs and dedicated staff are truly the pinnacle of the Big Cove Camp experience.

Our staff are not only leaders but friends, teachers and role models to all of our campers. Camp staff members are a dedicated group of responsible young adults carefully selected for their character, maturity, skills and sincere interest in the growth and development of youth.

Leadership counsellors play a vital role at Big Cove as they are directly involved with training future Big Cove staff. They must have strong leadership skills, be able to work both independently and as part of a team, and be able to delegate jobs and tasks to participants while ensuring safety and fun. Leadership counsellors live in tipi’s in our leadership village away from the main part of camp with a co-leader and 8 campers. Leadership Counsellors will work in either our L1 or L2 program supporting the development and training of participants in hard skills such as archery, high ropes and canoeing as well as soft skills such as camper management, group dynamics and behaviour management.
