Lab Technician


Wachusett Brewing Co. is looking for a Quality Assurance Lab Technician who is eager and able to help and learn in the brewery Lab.  The Technician will work closely with the Quality Assurance Manager and Microbiologist.  

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

•Collect aseptic samples from raw materials and all stages of the brewing process.

•Organize and perform a schedule to collect samples, prepare media and sterilize equipment.

•Process yeast, beer, cider, and raw materials for microbiological analysis using direct plating and filter funnel techniques.

•Conduct molecular analysis using Biomerieux/GeneUp to identify hop-resistant bacteria.

  • Analyze and identify microbes using microscopic, culture, staining, and other techniques.
  • Record and report results daily to brewery management.

•Clear bright beer tanks for turbidity, alcohol, and sensory specifications.

•Perform sensory analysis on finished beverages.

•Research emergent / relevant topics in scholarly and technical journals and resources.

•Analyze IBUs, alcohol, density, color, pH, and other beer characteristics.

•Assist in day-to-day lab operations: restock reagents, maintain and reorder supplies when needed, and maintain a clean lab.

•Perform yeast cell counts in a timely manner to expedite pitching, cropping, and fermenter turnover in the brewhouse.
