Village Media, an expanding network of local news and information websites, is proud to participate in News Media Canada's Local Journalism Initiative program. This program supports local civic journalism covering the diverse needs of underserved communities.


We are looking for a talented and motivated journalist to fill a contract position with our OrilliaMatters team, covering the stories that matter to the Township of Ramara and the Chippewas of Rama First Nation.


The successful candidate for this position: 


  • Wants to tell the many unseen stories happening in the Township of Ramara and especially those important to the people of Rama First Nation 

  • Has a passion for, and interest in telling deeper stories about Indigenous issues

  • Recognizes the importance of civic coverage related to Rama First Nation and the on-reserve gaming industry

  • Acknowledges the ongoing process and importance of truth and reconciliation

  • Will also cover stories throughout the small communities within Ramara - including those related to farming, tourism, the aggregate industry, economic development and housing

  • Reports quickly, clearly and accurately and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines 

  • Has a track record of success in cultivating sources and fostering community contacts and relationships

  • Are committed to fairness, accuracy and transparency, and have impeccable ethics

  • Have exceptional writing and editing skills

  • Are not afraid to ask tough questions when required and are committed to watchdog journalism

Qualifications:


  • Degree or diploma in journalism, or related experience

  • Superior language, writing and editing skills, with a thorough knowledge of Canadian Press style standards

  • Strong photography and video skills

  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

  • A valid driver's licence and reliable vehicle
