The Director of Nursing is responsible for the leadership and management of the Nursing Department. 

This includes the delivery and maintenance of quality care and services to residents. The Director of Nursing will foster an organizational culture characterized by team-work, precision, openness, engagement, challenges, reports and deliverable results. The primary purpose of the job position is planning, organizing, developing and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern the facility and as may be directed by Administration.

It is the duty of all employees to promote and support a resident centered care environment that ensures the treatment of all residents, family members, visitors, fellow employees and customers with kindness, respect, and dignity.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:

1.     Commits to the Vincentian Collaborative System (VCS) mission to nurture and sustain a ministry of compassionate care that preserves the human dignity of persons within a diverse and changing society.

2.     Upholds and promotes the VCS values of spirituality, compassion, quality, dignity, collaboration, advocacy and stewardship.

3.     Promotes and supports a resident centered care environment that ensures the treatment of all residents, family members, visitors, fellow employees and customers with kindness, respect, and dignity.

4.     Adheres to all facility and department work rules, policies and procedures.

5.     Set and monitor achievement of goals for the Nursing Department consistent with established philosophy and standards of practice.

6.     Collaborates with Human Resources in areas including recruitment, orientation, training, staff development, performance evaluation, disciplinary action and policies and procedures.

7.     Responsible for meeting required department staffing ratios.

8.     Establish, implement and continually update competency/skills checklists for nursing staff.

9.     Prepare and ensure adherence to an annual operating budget for the Nursing Department.

10.  Maintain and guide the implementation of current policies and procedures, which reflect adherence to collaborative and external regulation guidelines.

11.  Ensure compliance with resident rights policies and work to resolve resident grievances.

12.  Establish and monitor compliance with an effective medical record documentation system.

13.  Establish and maintain productive lines of communication with residents and families, internal staff and external community.

14.  Prepare and submit reports on nursing department operations, as required.

15.  Actively participate in the quality improvement process for the facility.

16.  Participate in and/or provide in-service education sessions.

17.  Attend and participate in department/facility meetings, as required.

18.  Schedule, direct and document regular meetings with nursing staff to ensure effective communication.

19.  Participate in facility program development activities.

20.  Assess continuing education opportunities appropriate to discipline and responsibilities.

21.  Assist surveyors and inspectors to facilitate regulatory compliance.

22.  Direct Nursing and Care Plan teams.

23.  Oversee Restorative, Wounds Prevention and Infection Control Programs.

24.  Ability to identify safety hazards and initiate corrective action.

25.  Ability to assume responsibility for the development of nursing service objectives, performance standards of nursing practice for each category of nursing personnel and nursing polices and procedures.

26.  Ability to assess resident care needs and assist in the individualized plans of resident care and make recommendations for specialized rehabilitation.

27.  Ability to manage nursing services, including emergency situations.

28.  Ability to assess equipment and supply needs and make recommendations to the Administrator.

29.  Ability to conduct interviews, hire nursing service employees, conduct counseling interviews and initiate disciplinary action, as necessary.

30.  Ability to prepare written employee performance evaluations and provide input regarding salary increases, promotions or terminations.

31.  Performs all other duties assigned.

1.     Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse licensure in good standing or temporary practice permit required.

2.     Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.  Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.

3.     Five (5) years of nursing experience in long term care or similar health care environment preferred.


Work Environment:            

Employees of a long term care facility work in a resident care environment that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Employees can be expected to be exposed to unpleasant odors and may encounter physically or verbally aggressive residents.

 Working conditions include normal indoor temperatures.  There may also be times when employees perform duties outdoors.  Depending on the season, outdoor temperatures will vary.

 Employees may come into contact with residents who have infectious diseases or to resident bodily fluids or blood.  In addition, employees may come into contact with hazardous materials and facility equipment.

Selected candidates will need to successfully complete pre-hire testing including, a drug test, physical exam, TB test and background check.
