Optical Engineer


Position Summary

The Optical Engineer will assist with the modeling, development and optimization of optical hardware and test systems on the company’s fiber optic sensing product and technology roadmap. This position will support the organization in optics/photonics and optical metrology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand overall customer product requirements and how they relate to optical design
  • Lead the design and development of existing / future state fiber optic sensing technology
  • Conduct Zemax and FDTD simulations as needed to converge on optimal design
  • Develop optical test procedures, assist in setting up labs for technology validation
  • Maintain the optical labs and equipment to ensure adequate capability to support development programs
  • Apply build-in-quality tools such as FMEA, DFX to ensure both manufacturability and reliability post release
  • Conduct troubleshooting and root cause analysis as needed
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with cross-functional project teams and customers as needed
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional development
  • Fulfill additional work-related duties as required

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Applied Physics or technical equivalent (preference will be given to those with a Master's Degree)
  • Minimum 4+ years of hands-on experience in optical systems design
  • Skilled in optic/photonic modelling using Zemax / FDTD techniques or alternatives
  • Experience with setting up lab setups using free space optical setups
  • Experience with the development and commercialization of new products
  • Understanding of integrated optical system designs
  • An innovative and out-of-the-box thinker with an ability to see multiple ways of tackling a problem
  • Excellent time management skills and able to deliver under tight timelines
