Seasonal Ranger for Camp Comstock, Ithaca NY

This position is responsible for seasonal grounds/building maintenance and repairs for property site as to support summer resident camp and as directed by the Camp Director; support programming and work in partnership with on-site program leaders. Main duties will include mowing, weedwacking, maintaining boats and vehicles, light repairs and general maintenance work (removing garbage, cleaning cabins/bathrooms, replacing lightbulbs, etc) as needed during camp sessions. Position starts immediately and runs through September. This position could turn into full time/year round for the right person.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities.

  • Maintains the interior and exterior operations of camp buildings. Maintains water supply and treatment, septic system and plumbing schedules. Ensure garbage/trash left at dumpster is removed. Maintains gates and posted signs to discourage unauthorized access onto camp property.  Checks building(s) and grounds for cleanliness, good repair, functionality, and adequate supplies before and after group/troop uses a site. Monitors site for damage caused by weather or vandalism and reports findings to the Camp Director.  Maintains fire alarm and detection systems and their operation, maintenance, and routine testing; type, location, and maintenance of fire extinguishers; inspection and maintenance of exits; required fire drills and log.

  • Cleans and maintains equipment for daily use

  • Provides daily support to Camp Director, volunteers and staff for camp projects and customer service. Give emergency help to camp staff as needed. Provide regular security patrols during camp sessions. Assists campers in moving into and out of units; and provides authorized equipment and supplies to ensure a successful camping experience.

  • Follows OSHA, GSUSA and council policies and guidelines to ensure compliance with relevant Federal, state and local laws, regulations, and codes.  Meet ACA requirements and ensure annual approved safety plans are followed. Is familiar with NYS Health Codes.

  • Ensures vehicles and equipment are accessible, functional, and meet legal requirements. Ensures assigned vehicles are maintained and operated according to NYPENN policies and procedures.

  • Establish positive working relationships and communication with staff, volunteers and the community. Exhibit positive leadership qualities both within the organization and when representing the organization to the community.  Works productively with a diverse group of people.  Assists fund development by promoting council and troop fundraising events and identifying potential donors.

  • Maintains weekly written log of work performed and time spent on each task; check in daily with Camp Director to complete priority tasks to support summer camp

Key Performance Indicators:

Ensure camps are properly prepared for visitors/members by maintaining a safe and clean property

  • Comply with all council and governing authority directives for maintenance 

  • Provide excellent customer service to all visitors/campers on property

  • Communicate all issues and concerns regarding property use/safety to council for timely resolutions

Education:

  • High school degree required.

Required, Specialized, or Technical Knowledge:

  • Must haver a clean, valid driver's license and be willing to drive the camp truck, ATV, and boats. Must have or be willing to obtain a valid NYS Motorized Boating License 

  • 1 year minimum property maintenance, landscaping/lawn care, or similar experience.  Have some working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and other maintenance-related areas.  

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment is a bonus.

  • Professional manner and appearance.

  • Able to work with minimal direction and supervision, with ability to organize time and duties, follow through with assignments and meet deadlines. Ability to coordinate numerous ongoing activities.

  • Flexibility in work assignments and interest in assuming new responsibilities in an evolving work situation are essential

  • Ability to employ strict discretion in sensitive situations.

  • Comfort with uncertainty and ambiguity while being proactive in anticipating and preempting problems.

  • Ability to respond to and attend to issues after hours (be on call)

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent movement.  Travel work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

  • Must be able to work outside in heat 

Work Conditions:

  • Compensation: $18-20 per hour, 40 hours/week
  • Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm 
  • No onsite housing is provided 
  • Some evening and weekend work conditions may occur
