GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The People and Culture (P&C) Generalist is responsible for providing support to all employees on matters related to talent and culture. This position works within the People and Culture team. This team is responsible for stewarding FIRST’s culture, developing our people, and ensuring our organization continues to thrive as an inclusive, impactful and values-driven workplace.

The P&C Generalist is responsible for supporting the full employee cycle, including recruiting, onboarding, and supporting employees and managers to perform their best work. This position carries out responsibilities in ensuring compliance with employment law and safety regulations, collective agreement in hiring, onboarding, record-keeping, training and development, people relations, performance management, and offboarding. The P&C Generalist also participates as a member of organization committees, such as Occupational Health and Safety and participates in management representation in collective bargaining processes. This is an onsite position that will start at 368 Powell Street, Vancouver until we move to the redeveloped building located at 320 E. Hastings Street. 

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Assist with all internal and external people (HR) related matters
  • Participate in developing organizational guidelines and procedures
  • Assist with the recruitment process by identifying candidates, conducting reference checks and issuing employment contracts
  • Conduct employee onboarding and orientation
  • Ensure managers have developed and implemented training programs for new employees 
  • Investigate complaints brought forward by employees and assist in any disciplinary actions
  • Coordinate employee development plans and performance management and recommend motivation strategies
  • Maintain employee personnel records
  • Assist with Payroll duties involving reviewing and supporting managers on tasks related to timesheets, absences, schedules, and position setup
  • Ensure compliance with the collective agreement and Employment Standards Act
  • Coordinate with hiring managers for recruitment and selection of new employees
  • Participate in the Health and Safety Committee
  • Manage WorkSafe BC claims on behalf of the employer and is involved in return-to-work plans
  • Liaise with various departments, informing them of internal staff changes
  • Communicate with our IT support team in managing employee email accounts and hardware/software needs
  • Coordinate off-boarding and exit interviews
  • Support team with overflow people related work in peak times


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Post-second education, degree or diploma in a relevant field plus 3-5 years’ experience in Human Resources.
  • Experience in a unionized work environment and experience working with a collective agreement are required.
  • Practiced people relations experience and application of BC provincial employment standards
  • Efficient HR administration and people management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Works comfortably under pressure and meets tight deadlines
  • Excellent computer literacy with capability in email, MS Office
  • Working knowledge of HR and Applicant Tracking Systems; Payworks experience is an asset
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Regular communication is maintained with all levels of management and staff while completing work. Key relationships include: 

  • Team members and manager within People & Culture: seek input or to exchange information about people-related matters
  • First United Church staff: to exchange information, advise or receive instruction regarding human resources and labour relations
  • F12, Indeed, UFCW 1518, WorkSafe and other external parties: regular communication to provide information, answer general inquiries, phone calls, emails, etc.
