Job Summary


The Addictions Support Worker at Phoenix Society assists clients experiencing mental health and substance use issues. The position is responsible for client support and community building, floor management, case management, and supporting group programs. The Addictions Support Worker facilitates the recovery and capacity-building of clients to maximize their potential and support their goals for successful independent living in the community. The Addictions Support Worker provides appropriate care (non-clinical) in areas such as support with provides a variety of day-to-day physical, emotional, and social supports, advocacy, life skills assistance, information, resources, and demonstrations.


Responsibilities:


Support Services

×           Participates in case planning with clients and/or healthcare providers by performing duties such as interviewing clients to identify problems and needs, obtaining required information from a variety of sources such as  families and care providers, documenting client needs and wants, and assisting clients to determine appropriate programs.
×           Provides individual support with respect to demonstrations, modeling, and behaviour management to clients, their families, and their personal networks, to assist with the development of physical, social, emotional, and life skills such as maintaining personal hygiene, housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, meeting financial obligations, making and keeping appointments, and interpersonal skills.
×           Contribute to maintaining a therapeutic environment following therapeutic community principles which include empathy, compassion, accountability, utilizing trauma informed principles, and encouraging supportive relationships within a community setting.
×           Observes clients, identifies and assesses potential emergency situations by conducting baseline and daily check-ins of client progress, and develops short-term strategies to deal with such situations. Reports medical, behavioural, and other problems as required. Provides feedback and input regarding clients’ needs, performance, and progress.
×           As part of an interdisciplinary team, and in accordance with established guidelines, facilitates Psycho-Educational client workshops covering areas such as life skills and mental health, emotions, behaviour, relapse prevention, contingency management, and transition planning.
×           Identifies available social, economic, recreational, and educational services and resources in the community that will meet clients’ needs. Provides clients with related information and connect clients to relevant community resources, services and opportunities.
×           Support responses to critical issues such as suicide risk, worsening mental health issues, depression, anxiety, etc., based on recommendations from the Clinical team.
×           Articulate and reinforce program guidelines to the clients encourage positive engagement and interactions.
×           Monitoring client’s activities within residential buildings to ensure that areas are appropriately used for their purpose.
×           Ensure a safe milieu on the treatment floors.
×           Act as an advocate for the client during their stay at the Phoenix Centre
×           Completes and maintains client related records and documentation such as care plans, progress reports, statistics, and daily logs.



Community Relations
×           Act as a liaison with the community and promotes/encourages community involvement in the program
×           Maintain current knowledge of social, economic, recreational and educational resources in the community
 
Qualifications


×           Diploma in Community Social Service.
×           2 years of experience providing one to one and group support in the community social services sector.
Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Or other Qualifications determined to be reasonable and relevant to the level of work
×           Experience working with marginalized populations, substance use and mental health services, mental health, and corrections beneficial.
×           Knowledge of the social determinants of health, the biopsychosocial model of addiction, and concurrent disorders and harm reduction principles.
×           Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening is required
×           Satisfactory completion of Tuberculosis Screening form is required
×           Satisfactory completion of Employee Immunization Record form is required
×           First aid certification with CPR is required
 
Skills & Knowledge


-       Understanding of concurrent disorders, addictions, and addictions supports.
-       Computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, Outlook, and experience using a client information system or medical records system.
-       Excellent knowledge of the issues pertaining to recovery, substance use, concurrent disorders, and homelessness.
-       Knowledge of the BC Mental Health Act, Community Care and Assisted Living Act, Adult Care Regulations, Personal Information Protection Act, etc., and other facilities and community resources
-       Good knowledge of facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution techniques
-       High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation
-       Strong case management, client support and consultation skills
-       Ability to make effective referrals, reflecting in-depth knowledge of community resources and strong relationships with community partners
-       Ability to lead and work in a trauma-informed practice

Salary for this role is between $33.71 and $35.58 per hour.
