Animal Behaviour Class Instructor – Contractor 

Instructors required for evening and weekend classes.

Calgary Humane Society is seeking Behaviour Class Instructor Contractors who are responsible for the instruction and facilitation of dog training classes, and private consultations, the purpose of which is to educate owners on humane and effective training methods and to set up both owners and pets for success in the community. Classes and consults are held on evenings and weekends on-site at Calgary Humane Society. For further information on classes please visit our website.

Duties:

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Meet with individuals and their dogs to provide one-on-one support and resources for a private consultation. 
• Communicate with the Behaviour Outreach team regarding any resources and tools required for private consultation clients. 
• Facilitate the instruction of scheduled training classes including:
• Practicing positive reinforcement training methods;
• Reviewing class attendee list and ensuring class materials are prepared for attendees;
• Setting up and cleaning rooms and spaces used both before and after classes;
• Delivery of CHS class curriculum while ensuring the safety of the public and attendees at all times;
• Following locking and building alarm procedures when closing
• Communicate resource needs and any facility issues to the Behaviour Outreach Team. 
• Maintain positive working relationships with training class volunteers by providing direction, support, and guidance.
• Practice safe animal handling.

• Excellent organizational skills and detail oriented.
• Commitment to continual learning of best practices, skills, and trends in the animal behaviour sciences.
• Uphold and model CHS’s values at all times.

Position Requirements: 

• Contractor will be required to invoice CHS for services rendered and will be responsible for their own tax remittances per CRA guidelines. 
• Behaviour certification or working towards certification such as CPDT-KA, The Academy for Dog Trainers, KPA, etc.
• Membership in PPG Pet Professional Guild considered a strong asset .
• Demonstrated force free training philosophies congruent with the organization.
• Contractor will be required to provide a criminal record check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS.
• Minimum high school diploma.
• Genuine concern for the welfare of animals.
• Ability to communicate and direct effectively, both verbally and in writing (a written competency assessment may be included as part of the interview process).
• Physically capable of, and comfortable with safely handling a variety of dogs with varying temperaments.
