Reporting to the technical services superintendent, the chief mining engineer will be responsible for developing the scope of mining engineering projects and coordinating the various stages of implementation. He/she will optimize and supervise the planning of underground work development, in addition to assisting the technical services superintendent in his or her tasks and responsibilities. Based at the Windfall site, in the Nord-du-Québec region, he/she will work an 8-day on, 6-day off schedule. Transportation, accommodation and meals provided.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act at all times as a leader in safety, environment and community relations to help achieve the highest standards;
  • Comply at all times with occupational health and safety and environmental policies and regulations and ensure that these rules are complied with by staff;
  • Supervise and act as a mentor by sharing technical experience with members of the mining engineering team;
  • Contribute actively to studies on current and future company projects;
  • Participate in, coordinate and supervise the various engineering stages of the different projects, including, among other things, ramp development, ground control, ventilation, permanent infrastructures and dewatering in order to develop the project;
  • Plan, organize and supervise the work of contractors;
  • Develop and implement new methodologies for projects in the design phase, feasibility study phase and for existing and future operational projects;
  • Optimize and supervise the planning of mining work development;
  • Participate in the establishment of mining project budgets and carry out rigorous control of all costs in order to report anomalies as quickly as possible; 
  • Drafting monthly reports and associated variances; 
  • When required, making presentations to members of management or other stakeholders to monitor the progress of the work;
  • Acting as the company's representative on site and ensuring that all work is carried out according to the standards and procedures established by the Company;
  • Communicate budget targets and performance achieved by operations in tonnage, development, grade and productivity;
  • Perform any other task related to the position of chief mining engineer that is relevant to the success of the project.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Hold a university degree in mining engineering;
  • Be a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ);
  • Have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the mining industry, including experience in project management and supervision; 
  • Have solid experience in mining operations and a general knowledge of the various engineering principles related to mine operations;
  • Have experience working with First Nations (an asset);
  • Hold a valid class 5 driver's license;
  • Hold an explosives license; 
  • Have successfully completed mining modules 1-2-3-4-5 and 7.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Have knowledge of the various processes according to industry standards;
  • Very good knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Outlook, etc.) as well as specialized software such as the AutoCAD (Pro-Mine), Ventsim and Rocscience suite; 
  • Knowledge of Deswik and Mine 2-4D software (an asset);
  • Functional oral and written English (will have communicated with suppliers and Gold Fields management);
  • Good knowledge of the laws and regulations applicable to exploration and mining sites.
