Staff Veterinarian
General Summary: The Staff Veterinarian is responsible for all aspects of daily clinical, medical, and surgical care of the Zoo’s collection. This position is responsible for incoming shipments and quarantine oversight. The Staff Veterinarian oversees the public health program and infectious disease management for the Zoo, reproductive medical management, and the student programs, including the Cranfield Summer Research Intern. This position will participate in ongoing research and fieldwork. This position reports to the Senior Director of Animal Health, Conservation and Research. This position will support the Zoo the achieve its conservation, sustainability, education and DEAI goals.
Essential Functions:
Primary Functions:
- Ensure comprehensive day to day medical and surgical care of the collection;
- Provide medical care of the hospitalized and quarantined patients, including collection patients, and other non-collection patients;
- Responsible for the oversight and implementation of the veterinary student externship program and Summer Research Internship;
- Responsible for organizing the veterinary components of incoming animal shipments in collaboration with the Taxon Curators;
- Establish, update, and administer the Zoo’s medical and quarantine protocols in collaboration with the hospital managers;
- Oversee implementation of the Employee Health Program and serve as the veterinary liaison to consult on issues of employee health, zoonoses, and public health as they relate to our staff, guests, and the collection;
- Oversee planning, implementation, and revision of infectious disease outbreak protocols and response for the Zoo;
- Participate in veterinary collaboration with outside institutions;
- Maintain compliance with the veterinary components of USDA regulations and AZA standards and all state veterinary regulations and federal DEA regulations;
- Participate in the Animal Recapture Team;
- Actively participate in conservation and research projects supported by the Zoo’s conservation program;
- Provide medical and surgical care to wildlife patients when presented to the Zoo;
- Support the Zoo's mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, and governance sustainability goals;
- Promote the mission of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore;
- Perform other duties as assigned; and,
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.
Communication (Internal and External):
- Enter medical data into the ZIMS record-keeping system in order to keep medical records updated;
- Lecture on research projects and zoo medicine subjects when requested;
- Publish articles on research and clinical cases in the field of zoo medicine;
- Participate in national organizations such as AZA, AAZV, AAV, ARAV, WDA, AAWV and AVMA, which further the goals of zoos, zoo medicine and veterinary medicine;
- Attend continuing education meetings necessary to fulfill licensure requirements;
- Communicate with and provide assistance to various governmental bodies dealing with wildlife issues, such as Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and United States Fish and Wildlife; and,
- Attend required zoo managerial and staff meetings.
Management of Resources (Financial, Human Resources, Facilities):
- Supervise and manage the Veterinary Externship program and Summer Research Internship program including scheduling, application process, mentorship, and evaluation.
- Establish and update the Zoo’s medical and quarantine policies and protocols to adhere to AZA standards, AAZV guidelines, and to meet the needs of the Zoo.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- DVM, VMD, or equivalent.
Experience/Training:
- Internship or residency in zoo medicine preferred;
- ACZM-boarded or qualified strongly preferred;
- Minimum of one-year experience in zoological medicine required;
- Valid Maryland veterinary license, DEA license, Maryland controlled substances license and USDA Veterinary Accreditation; and
- Valid driver’s license.

Equipment:
- Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, telephone, radio, and vehicles, hand tools, animal restraint and capture devices, darting equipment, incubators, scales, etc.; and,
- Various medical machines, tools, and equipment;
Working Conditions:
- Must have 24 hour on-call availability;
- Must be able to exert up to 70 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, balance;
- Must be able to travel large areas of the Zoo as needed;
- Must be able to work outdoors in all seasons;
- Must be able to work while wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment;
- Contact with hazardous chemicals, animal related injury and diagnostic radiography and anesthesia equipment; and,
- Exposure to zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack.
