Heavy Equipment Operators (Junior & Senior)

Department:      Lil’wat Construction Enterprises 

Reporting to:     Mines & Services Manager
Location: Project-dependent

 

Lil’wat Construction Enterprises is seeking qualified Heavy Equipment Operators at both the Junior and Senior levels. This role is responsible for the safe, efficient, and professional operation of heavy equipment across a variety of construction projects. Level assignment will be based on experience, demonstrated judgment, and ability to work independently.

Common Core Responsibilities (both levels)
  • Safely operate heavy equipment including excavators, backhoes, loaders, dozers, and articulated rock trucks
  • Perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, landscaping, and truck loading
  • Conduct daily pre‑start inspections, fueling, greasing, and end‑of‑shift check‑out procedures
  • Read and interpret drawings, layout information, and grade stakes
  • Complete daily equipment and safety-related documentation clearly and accurately
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and report mechanical issues
  • Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and site rules
  • Maintain professionalism with crew members, supervisors, and clients
  • Perform related site tasks as assigned
Common Qualifications and Attributes (both levels)
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual labour in variable weather conditions
  • Strong safety awareness and attention to detail
  • Clear, professional communication skills
  • Ability to manage priorities and work to timelines
  • First Aid, WHMIS, and industry training are assets
  • Class 5 Driver’s Licence and clear driving abstract required for driving duties
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as required

Junior Heavy Equipment Operator

Focus: Skill development, safe execution, and productivity under direction.

Expected Capability:

  • Demonstrates functional knowledge of equipment operation and jobsite safety
  • Operates equipment safely while following established plans and direction
  • Builds proficiency in grading, excavation techniques, and efficient machine use
  • Understands scope of work and contributes effectively as part of a crew

Typical Experience:

  • Early‑career operator
  • 1+ year of construction or equipment operating experience an asset
  • Machine‑specific hours considered an asset

Senior Heavy Equipment Operator

Focus: Independent execution, judgment, and on‑site leadership.

Expected Capability:

  • Plans and executes work activities with minimal supervision
  • Anticipates site challenges and adjusts methods to maintain safety, quality, and productivity
  • Makes sound operational decisions in changing site conditions
  • Leads by example and provides informal direction or guidance to others
  • Takes accountability for sequencing, efficiency, and quality of completed work

Typical Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years or 3,000 hours operating experience on excavator or backhoe
  • Proven problem‑solving, job planning, and decision‑making skills
Level Assignment

Classification as Junior or Senior Heavy Equipment Operator will be determined based on demonstrated experience, operating hours, and ability to work independently.
