Program Advocate - Brother/Sister Mentoring Program

POSITION SUMMARY:

Within this position lies the primary responsibility to support adult/youth--mentor/mentee matches through managing required tasks including but not limited to; frequent communication and documentation of contacts with mentor, mentee & families and assist with recruiting, screening, training and as needed all other program operations of the YMCA Brother/Sister Mentoring Program.  Reports directly to the YMCA Director of Social Responsibility and works cooperatively with other coordinating department staff.  Work time/place schedule may be flexible and does include some required work done in the office each week and some work done remotely each week.  This work is done on a part-time schedule and total hours worked will fluctuate throughout a pay period dependent on factors including but not limited to assigned case list and related assigned incidental task(s) for performing the whole job.  Must demonstrate and enforce the core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.    Support families and mentor through monthly contacts and documentation.

2.    Maintain communication with the family, the mentee and the mentor.

3.    Records all monthly communication contacts on the database system and on the call list.

4.    Maintain confidential case file system for families and mentors on a monthly basis.

5.    Oversee family intake procedures including interviews and files documentation.

6.    Provide one-to-one placement for youth in the program.

7.    Document mentor intake procedures and help with initial paperwork, as needed

8.    Attend a monthly program match group activity three times a year.

9.    Attend quarterly Mentor Network development activities.

10.  Assist in the evaluation of the program, other program development, promotion, and implementation.

11.  Promote and participate in YMCA activities, as requested, including the mentor appreciation events.

12.  Assist in the recruitment of potential mentors through various community avenues.

13.  May be assigned additional tasks required for this position, including, but not limited to, School Based Mentoring, Group Mentoring, Life Experience Interviews, etc.

14.  Assist the Program Director in reporting activities to the Advisory Board, United Way, and other sponsoring agencies.

15.  Follow all program policy and procedures including Child Abuse Prevention Polices.

16.  Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Social Responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.    Never been accused or convicted of any child abuse including sexual abuse.

2.    Passionate about helping youth connect with positive role models.

3.    Experience and proven skills working with youth.

4.    Support and promote the mentorship program throughout the community.

5.    CPR, First Aid AED certifications must be completed within 60 days of hire (YMCA provided).

6.    Experience and proven skills in working with volunteers.

7.    High degree of tact and knowledge of working with a diversity of people, businesses, and organizations.

8.    Ability to provide support, education, and structure to families and volunteers.

9.    Ability to document confidential information in an accurate, non-partisan manner.

10.  Ability to follow multiple procedures and complete work in a professional, accurate, and timely manner.

11.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

12.  Ability to communicate in a positive manner and maintain professional relationships with families, volunteers, and other people connected to the program; by phone, email or other appropriate means.

13.  Is a self-starter and has the ability to work both independently and in teamwork settings.

14.  Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations (depending upon the programs).  Perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds at a time.  The ability to calmly and effectively react in an emergency situation.
