ABOUT US  

The Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society (ACEH) exists to lovingly provide culturally supportive, affordable housing and services that end Aboriginal homelessness on Vancouver Island. With an island-wide mandate, the ACEH’s work is guided by Indigenous leaders from across the three island Tribal Groups - Kwakwaka’wakw, NuuChahNulth, Coast Salish, as well as Métis Nation.  


POSITION OVERVIEW
 

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Human Resources Manager to fill a temporary position covering a leave of absence. This role is available immediately and will continue until January 31, 2025. Post-October, there may be an opportunity to specialize in Labour Relations or extend to a similar role within the Human Resources team based on revised deliverables.

You will be required to be willing and able to complete a Criminal Record Check through the Ministry of Justice for working with vulnerable adults and youth and able to provide three professional references. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

    • Supervise the HR team. 
    • Review, update, develop, and implement HR policies and procedures that align with ACEH’s Operations Plan and comply with current employment standards and WorkSafe BC regulations.  
    • Oversee the recruitment process, including drafting job descriptions/postings, reviewing, shortlisting, and interviewing candidates. 
    • Manage employee orientation, onboarding, training, and wellness programs.  
    • Coach management on conflict resolution, navigating team challenges, ensuring consistent application of policies and procedures, and changes in ESA regulations.  
    • Promote employee morale, engagement, fairness, diversity, and equity.  
    • Respond to formal complaints, conduct impartial investigations, and manage employee relations cases as needed.   
    • Handle disciplinary actions in compliance with legislation.  
    • Manage WorkSafe BC claims and related documentation, serve as a liaison with WorkSafeBC representatives.  
    • Manage and update the HRIS.  
    • Coordinate annual updates of the employee benefits program and respond to related inquiries.  
    • Develop and evaluate labour relations strategies with leadership.  
    • Coordinate leave cases and supervise return-to-work processes.  
    • Support organizational changes per the new collective agreement.  

KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS 

  • Expert in relevant legislation including Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Code, and OH&S Regulations. 
  • Knowledge of UNDRIP principles. 
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle preferred. 
  • Preference for candidates with First Nations, Inuit, and/or Metis ancestry. 
  • Experience in non-profits preferred. 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, mediation, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe. 
  • Minimum 5 years of recent progressive HR experience with a focus on Employee Relations. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR Management, Law, or a relevant discipline. 
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities.
