Healthy Lifestyles Director - Group Exercise
POSITION SUMMARY: The Healthy Lifestyles Director - Group Exercise is responsible for the development, delivery, operation and quality of all YMCA health and fitness programs. Ability to teach or substitute for group exercise classes. Other key functions include budget development, fiscal management and staff development. This position is key to communicating the YMCA mission and goals to the community at large as well as to members and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Undergraduate degree in kinesiology or related field preferred.
2. Be able to teach a variety of group exercise classes.
2. Minimum of 5 years experience in the group exercise field with at least 1 year of related administrative experience in the development, supervision and management of fitness programs and activities.
3. Certification requirements include, within 90 days of hire, completion of Child Abuse Prevention, CPR, First Aid, AED, Blood-borne Pathogens.
4. Excellent interpersonal skills
5. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
6. Ability to communicate with members, co-workers, children, youth and visitors in a pleasant and professional manner.
7. Ability to resolve conflicts quickly, discreetly and effectively.
8. YMCA program-specific certification requirements within 1 year.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise indoor and outdoor program activities; ability to tolerate moderate to high noise levels; verbal, visual and auditory ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT:
· Designs, implements and evaluates adult and youth health and fitness programs based on target market, organization strategic plan and community needs.
· Ensures accurate and professional delivery of all YMCA health and fitness programs, including but not limited to Group Exercise, Cardio and Strength Training, youth and family fitness programs, youth sports and the Café.
· Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
· Oversees scheduling of program areas for optimum use and effectiveness.
· Ensures that health seekers and already active exercisers are identified and supported during the first 30 days of membership.
· Assists in the development and distribution of marketing and promotions for programs.
· Develops a preventive maintenance schedule to guarantee that all fitness equipment is functioning properly and in “like new” condition at all times, and communicates regularly regarding equipment and budget needs.
· Ensures accurate and professional delivery of YMCA program information, policies, membership information, cancellation procedures, etc., along with YMCA mission and values to all guests, prospective members, program members and facility members by all staff and volunteers.
· Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
· Maintains all essential records for control, evaluation and reporting to YMCA senior staff and committees and prepares monthly membership dashboard as directed.
2. STAFF ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT:
· Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel as needed.
- Ensures that all new employees participate in the New Employee Orientation program.
- Maintains up-to-date records for all department staff and ensures job current descriptions and performance standards are on file.
- Ensures appropriate staff coverage in all assigned programs and services; fills in as needed.
- Provides leadership in regularly scheduled staff meetings, documents meeting minutes and training records accordingly. Attends management and operations staff meetings as assigned.
- Reviews and evaluates staff performance.
- Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
3. FISCAL MANAGEMENT:
· Develops annual operating budget for department; manages department budget to achieve monthly, quarterly and annual goals.
· Completes and reports variances monthly to management team meetings. Manages forecasts to meet operating plan.
· Maintains system for variance analysis, revenue and expense monitoring and control; prepares and submits documentation and reports as required.
· Oversees department spending and obtains authorizations accordingly.
4. SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT:
- Ensures that all facilities, program areas and equipment are clean and in proper working order, reporting problems promptly.
- Works in partnership with other YMCA staff to insure the facility is clean, safe and in usable condition and reports unsafe or unhealthful working conditions.
- Reports and follows through with appropriate action regarding all employee injuries, no matter how minor.
- Works with staff to develop a culture of safety and maintain commitment through regularly scheduled safety inspections.

- With the support and involvement of the Director of Volunteers, works to recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule and direct volunteers as needed.
- Works with the Director of Volunteers to build and develop volunteer capacity.
3. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & SUPPORT:
- Engages and supports collaborative relationships; internal or external, peer to peer, interdepartmental, member to member.
- Assists in YMCA fundraising activities/events.
