ELDERS SUPPORT DRIVER

Aklavik, Inuvik, Teet?’it Zheh, Tsiigehtchic F/T (37.5 hours per week)

 

The Gwich'in Tribal Council (GTC) is seeking candidates for the role of Elders Support Drivers.

Reporting to the Manager, Wellness Services, the Elders Support Driver is responsible for operations and maintenance of the GTC or Gwich’in Council passenger van while also supporting the provision of support services for community Elders, who are Participants to the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (GCLCA). The Elders Support Driver provides operational and logistical support to the Gwich’in Councils and the Gwich’in Tribal Council on an ‘as and when required’ basis.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Core Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

1.           Operations and Maintenance of a 15-passenger van

·             Operating a GTC passenger van to provide free transportation services to Elders in the community.

·             Performing daily inspection reports for the GTC passenger van and arranging the necessary maintenance required for the vehicle with GTC Corporate Services.

·             Overseeing the nightly storage of the GTC passenger van.

·             Completion of a daily trip log to capture key data such as time, passenger, destination, and pick-ups.

·             Cleaning and touch-ups are required to keep the GTC passenger in a clean and operable condition.

 

2.           Elders Support

·             Conducting check-ins of assigned Elders in the community to ensure their wellness while also confirming proper and safe access to their residence.

·             Assisting where required with the lifting and delivery of small personal items such as groceries for Elders into personal residences.

·             Performing periodic maintenance such as snow shovelling for Elders.

·             Advising the GTC Department of Health & Wellness when specific requirements of Elders are not being met.

 

3.           Logistical Support

·             Assisting with transportation of community residents to GTC-sponsored or supported events in other Gwich’in communities.

·             On an exceptional basis and with the approval of the Manager, Wellness Services, transport passengers to events and activities outside of the Gwich’in Settlement Area to locations such as Dawson City or Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory.

·             Supporting other Departments in the GTC on an ‘as & when required’ basis.


COMPETENCIES

The Key Competencies required for this position include:

1.      Focus on health and safety of passengers and staff members.

2.      Ability to follow directions and information clearly.

3.      Periodically dealing with conflict and unruly behaviour from passengers.

4.      Knowledge of customer service fundamentals.

5.      Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively.

6.      Problem solving and decision-making skills.

7.      Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.

8.      May be required to lift up to 10-15 kilograms and perform physically demanding work such as snow shoveling.

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualifications for this position include:

·   A valid class 4 driver’s license.

·   One to two (1-2) years of vehicle or equipment operation experience.

·   Other relevant experience may be considered.

The qualifications desired for this position include:

·   Fluency in the Gwich’in language.

·   Completion of customer service training or related field.

COMPENSATION

A competitive compensation plan will accompany the successful candidate including a comprehensive benefit plan.

Preference may be given to candidates who are Gwich'in Participants and have experience working in the non-profit or public sectors or in an Indigenous Government/Organization, preferably in a northern context.
