Coop/Student - Computer Systems Engineer (On-site)

We have an upcoming opportunity in the Software Development Department as a Computer Systems Engineer co-op student, working alongside the engineers who design, build and support the machines themselves.

We build real-time control into our farming implements using microcontrollers we program in house, both ARM-based Linux platforms and NXP S32 parts. That ranges from automating machine movement through to detecting automatically when grain has been unloaded. As a student on our embedded team you will write code that ends up in a field, on a real machine, during a real season.

Availability: 4-month or 8-month term 

In This Role You Will

• Write embedded C and Rust for ARM-based Linux controllers deployed on grain carts, motherbins and harrows.

• Work on CAN bus communication between the controller, the tractor and our operator displays, using J1939 and ISOBUS (ISO 11783).

• Build and debug services on embedded Linux: cross compilation, systemd, serial and network interfaces, cellular connectivity, over-the-air updates.

• Interface with real hardware: load cells, sensors, actuators and motor controllers, then verify the behaviour on the machine rather than just on the bench.

• Instrument, profile and troubleshoot systems where memory, CPU and network are genuinely constrained.

• Write unit and integration tests, and take part in code review with the rest of the team.

• Produce technical documentation: design notes, interface definitions and test results.

• Support first-run field installation and help diagnose issues on machines already out in the field.

We’re Looking For

• Working toward a degree or diploma in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or Computer Science.

• Working knowledge of C or C++. Rust experience is welcome but not expected: we will teach you.

• Comfortable in Linux and on the command line: shell, git, building and debugging from source.

• Strong troubleshooting instincts. You can work from a symptom back to a root cause using logs, a scope or a logic analyzer.

• Willing to get out of the office and onto a machine. Some field time comes with the role.

• An asset: microcontroller or embedded projects from coursework, personal builds, robotics or a student design team.

• An asset: CAN-based protocols (J1939, ISOBUS, CANopen), real-time systems, Yocto or Buildroot, device drivers.

• An asset: Python, Docker, networking fundamentals, or experience with version control on a shared codebase.
