About the Role: Recreation Coordinator
The Recreation Coordinator is a key role within the YMCA, responsible for supporting the Health, Fitness & Recreation (HFR) team in planning, organizing, and implementing recreational activities and programs for adults (18+).
This role plays a major part in ensuring recreational bookings are properly scheduled, instructors follow YMCA protocols, members are checked into reservations, and programs run safely and effectively.
This position requires a passion for sports and recreation, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to the YMCA’s core values and mission.
Key Responsibilities
Program Operations
- Ensure smooth operation of recreation programs (registered and drop-in)
- Maintain high levels of member satisfaction, attendance, and retention
- Manage waitlists and program participation effectively
- Keep program schedules accurate, accessible, and updated in advance
Staff & Volunteer Support
- Support recruitment and onboarding of instructors and volunteers
- Ensure certifications and safeguarding standards are current
- Model and champion The Y Way behavioral standards
Program Delivery & Safety
- Lead programs (if certified)
- Ensure facilities and equipment are clean, safe, and maintained
- Follow all safety, inspection, and reporting requirements
Member Experience
- Respond to member questions and concerns professionally and promptly
- Provide
exceptional customer service including:
- Greeting members within 5 feet and acknowledging within 10 feet
- Proactively assisting members who need help
- Building strong member relationships
Facility & Cleanliness Standards
- Maintain clean, organized program spaces and common areas
- Ensure equipment is properly stored after use
- Address or report cleaning and maintenance issues promptly
Marketing & Engagement
- Develop promotional materials such as posters, flyers, and social media posts
- Communicate recreation offerings and program guides
- Support data collection and analysis for program attendance
Education & Qualifications
- High School Diploma required
- Post-secondary education in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Recreation Management, or related field (asset)
- 1–3 years of supervisory experience in recreation
- Experience in coaching or group fitness instruction (asset)
Skills & Attributes
- Passion for health, sports, recreation, and helping others
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office and Canva (or similar tools)
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Schedule Requirements
- Regular schedule includes evenings and weekends
- Likely shifts: Sunday–Thursday or Tuesday–Saturday
- Flexibility for irregular hours required
Requirements (Upon Hire)
- Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Abuse Register Check (within 6 months)
- Valid Intermediate Workplace First Aid & CPR-C
