4th Year Pediatric Audiology Externship 2025-2026

An amazing opportunity to work with a team of experienced pediatric audiologists, certified auditory-verbal therapists, and teachers of the deaf for a one-of-a-kind learning experience!

The audiology department at Texas Hearing Institute is seeking THREE highly motivated Doctor of Audiology students to complete an exciting and challenging fourth-year externship in pediatrics. This full-time externship will provide doctoral students with opportunities to learn about disorders of hearing in childhood, participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team, and develop the clinical skills necessary to enter the professional world as a pediatric audiologist.

PEDIATRIC HEARING ASSESSMENT AND TECHNOLOGY

At Texas Hearing Institute, we specialize in diagnostic testing to rule out or identify hearing loss in children. When hearing loss is identified, we collaborate with caregivers using a family-centered approach to determine optimal intervention and/or treatment options. Texas Hearing Institute audiology protocols are current, evidence-based, and follow best practices.

MELINDA WEBB SCHOOL

The Melinda Webb School (MWS) is located on-site within Texas Hearing Institute and is an auditory-oral school for students who are 18 months old through 6 years of age. Audiology externs assist MWS staff with troubleshooting and daily listening checks of personal hearing technology and HAT.

a.        include a brief description of the populations served

b.        the percentage of pediatrics seen, and

c.        the specific audiologic skills mastered.

3.      Note any audiology-related special skills, abilities or talents you would like us to know about.

4.      Briefly describe any volunteer activities related to the field of audiology that you feel are pertinent.

     Letter of Intent

Using an essay format, please answer the following questions:

1.        How did you hear about our externship program and why are you considering an externship at Texas Hearing Institute?

2.        Why do you want to be a pediatric audiologist?

3.        What do you hope to achieve during your externship?

4.        How will your externship benefit your professional development?

6.     Specific to audiology, what are you particularly passionate about? What sparks your interest?

     Two Letters of Reference (Must come directly from your supervisor)

1.      One from your university clinic supervisor

2.      One from an off-campus clinic supervisor

     Official Transcript/Grades from Your Graduate University

·         Must be sent directly from your school either via e-mail or mail

     Passing Praxis Score

·         The student or selected extern must submit proof of a passing Praxis score prior to your projected externship start date of June 2, 2025.

Additional Instructions:

1. Applications that are late or incomplete will not be considered. The student is responsible for ensuring all materials have been submitted. Submitted materials will not be returned.

2. Once your application materials have been received, you may be contacted for an initial phone interview.

3. Following those initial phone interviews, you will be notified if you have been selected for an in-person and/or a Zoom interview with the Audiology team.

4. Once an offer is made, you will have four days to accept the offer. All offers will be extended and finalized prior to Friday November 1, 2024.
