This role provides an opportunity to be a change agent working towards closing the achievement gap and removing barriers to thriving for youth. Children/teens are at the heart of our work and Mentors will help youth set goals, develop self-confidence and character, build leadership skills and provide access to external supports. Our program partners with community based non-profits to identify youth who would benefit from a positive, adult role model that can give targeted social and emotional support as well as mentor youth to be their best. Mentors will also learn about and build partnerships with community resources to assist their mentees and families.

Located at our Turn To Us facility in Nesquehoning, the Sensory Gym Coach will assist children diagnosed with autism or other special needs navigate the sensory gym based on sensory needs and goals. They will create a playful, encouraging, and interactive experience for the child, siblings, and caregivers by demonstrating sensory gym equipment and assisting the children.  

Duties:

  • Ensure guests complete waivers, sign policies and procedures form, photo release, and complete the survey
  • Provide a friendly, welcoming, and clean environment 
  • Clean, inspect, and put away all equipment after each session
  • Clean bathroom and floors
  • Share success stories for social media with the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • An understanding and acceptance of autism, sensory processing disorder, special needs and behaviors 
  • Flexibility - with schedules, cancelations, sensory gym activities
  • Ability to interact with the children, siblings, and parents 
  • Ability to sit on the floor, move equipment, and tables/chairs 
  • Background in Special Education, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, or special needs

While serving, Members earn a living stipend dispersed twice monthly as well as an education award at the end of successful service.
