Assistant Educator

General Summary: The Assistant Educator will assist the Education Manager and Educators in the instruction of educational programming throughout the summer.
Essential Functions:
Primary Function:
Ensure that all programming presented is engaging, innovative and effective, as determined by evaluation, and in direct support of the mission of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore;
Assist with educational programming for audiences of all ages on and off zoo grounds including, but not limited to, leading group games and/or activities, helping participants complete crafts and projects, supervising snack and lunch breaks during Zoo Camps, leading participants on walks through Zoo, and office activities;
Responsible for safety and well-being of all educational participants as managed by the Education Manager and/or Educators;
Maintain proper protocol and procedures required for all Zoo interactions with animals, visitors, and program participants;
Perform other duties as assigned; and,
Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.
Communication (Internal and External):
Assist in preparing and presenting all programs including needed materials; and,
Deliver extraordinary customer service to all zoo guests and internal customers.
Management of Resources (financial, human resources, facilities):

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Animal, science or education academic training.
Experience/Training:
Curriculum development in a formal or an informal setting is a plus;
Traits Desirable:
Minimum nineteen years of age.
Working knowledge of Windows programs and database input is a plus.
Equipment:
Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, telephone, radio, hand tools, gardening/carpentry tools and machinery etc.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to stand and remain active for an eight hour shift;
Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;
Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions;
Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events;
Must be able to exert up to 35 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects.
Daily contact with plants and animals including being subject to bites, stings and scrapes; and,
Ability to travel (car-van-golf cart) as needed;
