Assistant Educator

General Summary: The Assistant Educator will assist the Education Manager and Educators in the instruction of educational programming throughout the summer. 

Essential Functions:

Primary Function:

• Ensure that all programming presented is engaging, innovative and effective, as determined by evaluation, and in direct support of the mission of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore;

• Assist with educational programming for audiences of all ages on and off zoo grounds including, but not limited to, leading group games and/or activities, helping participants complete crafts and projects, supervising snack and lunch breaks during Zoo Camps, leading participants on walks  through Zoo, and office activities;

• Responsible for safety and well-being of all educational participants as managed by the Education Manager and/or Educators;

• Maintain proper protocol and procedures required for all Zoo interactions with animals, visitors, and program participants;  

• Perform other duties as assigned; and,

• Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.

Communication (Internal and External):

• Assist in preparing and presenting all programs including needed materials; and,

• Deliver extraordinary customer service to all zoo guests and internal customers.

Management of Resources (financial, human resources, facilities):

• Not applicable.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: 

• Animal, science or education academic training.

Experience/Training: 

• Curriculum development in a formal or an informal setting is a plus;

Traits Desirable:

• Minimum nineteen years of age.

• Working knowledge of Windows programs and database input is a plus.

Equipment:

• Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, telephone, radio, hand tools, gardening/carpentry tools and machinery etc.

Working Conditions:

• Must be able to stand and remain active for an eight hour shift; 

• Must be able to walk large areas of the Zoo as needed;

• Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions;

• Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events; 

• Must be able to exert up to 35 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects.

• Daily contact with plants and animals including being subject to bites, stings and scrapes; and,

• Ability to travel (car-van-golf cart) as needed;
