35 hours per week, 8 week term
The Communications Assistant’s primary role will be supporting the Communications Department with the preparation of Calgary Humane Society’s signature fundraising events. A people person, the Communications Assistant will also assist the Community Outreach Department by attending various markets, festivals and fairs during the busy summer season. The Communications Assistant will be required to have a flexible schedule in order to attend these events and gather and post content for our social media channels.
Duties:
- Using the provided equipment, assist with the photography and videography of animals and outreach events.
- Utilizing social media, post event appeals and updates through gathered outreach related content on the Calgary Humane Society social media channels.
- Assist with communications requests from various departments.
- Working with the Community Outreach Team, attend Community Outreach events and be a brand ambassador for Calgary Humane Society while engaging with the public.
- Support operational teams as needed basis, including tasks such as laundry, dishes, animal enrichment and kennel maintenance.
- Organize content by labelling files and folders while ensuring their correct place digitally for ease of access.
- Maintain Communications Department equipment as directed by the Manager of Communications.
- Attend weekly team meetings while contributing creative ideas to support our internal and external communications strategy.
- Occasionally assist in other areas of the shelter, including the feeding, cleaning, and enrichment of shelter animals as well as provided support as needed in Reception and Adoptions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Summer Job Requirements:
Calgary Humane Society summer jobs are subsidized through the Canada Summer Jobs program which offers wage subsidies to support employers to create quality summer work experiences for youth aged 15 to 30 years.
To be eligible for this position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program, candidates must meet the position requirements as well as be:
- between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- International students are not eligible.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum high school diploma
- Minimum of one year of professional or volunteer work experience
- Ability to commit to the full duration of the term of the position
- Strong videography and photography skills using a DSLR required
- Beginner level proficiency in Adobe programs considered an asset
- Collaborative mindset and a willingness to contribute to the Communications team wherever possible
- Comfortable being on camera, including social media, live on-air, and pre-taped interviews
- Driver’s License preferred
- Flexibility of working hours and shifts outside of normal business hours including weekends, occasional evenings, and overtime
- Demonstrated resiliency and ability to maintain positive and professional in a fast-paced environment
- Genuine interest in the welfare of animals and people and values congruent with the organization
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Dependable, reliable, and dedicated to completing assigned tasks and meeting deadlines while also demonstrating adaptability to changing priorities and work assignments
- Self-motivated with strong problem-solving and teamwork skills
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Successful candidate will be required to complete a police information check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS
- Physically capable of, and comfortable handling a variety of species including but not limited to cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and small critters
Hourly Rate:
- $17.00 + 6% Vacation Pay
