POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance and supervision of the Sr Director of Youth Programs, the Camp/ Afterschool Director is responsible for the organization, delivery and quality of YMCA programs to the membership, program participants and community. In addition, the Camp/ Afterschool Director is responsible for administrative tasks as they relate to program and membership, budgeting, committee involvement, staff hiring, supervision and mentoring, collaborative community efforts, facilities and equipment, annual campaign involvement, grants, sponsorships and planning.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

During the camp season the Day Camp/ Afterschool Director is responsible for:

  1. Responsible for all Day Camp-related staff recruitment and hiring processes. 
  2. Oversee and facilitate staff orientation, training, reviews and ongoing staff development.
  3. Ability to multitask, meet deadlines and operate in a fast-paced environment while leading a team to success.
  4. Coordinate Day Camp locations: secure and communicate effectively with partners.
  5. Design, deliver and evaluate the Day Camp experience that meets the needs and interests of the camp's target population to ensure their delivery in a safe and quality manner.
  6. Design, supervise and implement programs and activities appropriate to the camper population.
  7. Utilize Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) practices to analyze input from campers, families and staff regarding the quality, safety and enjoyment of the camp program and staff.
  8. Review, update and implement crisis and risk management procedures. 

 

During the off-season of camp, the Camp/Afterschool Director is responsible for:

  1. Afterschool & Winter Club staff recruitment and hiring processes.
  2. Coordination with Big Horn Schools for after-school transportation to the Y.
  3. Increase parent awareness of Camp programs to build trust.
  4. Responsible for scheduling, developing and evaluating after school staff.
  5. Responsible for developing and implementing innovative afterschool/camp curriculum and activities.
  6. Facilitate after-school program registration and maintenance records.
  7. Participate in afterschool/camp meetings, family nights, program events and staff meetings.
  8. Understand ratios and all youth staff, and know the number of youth in the program at all times.
  9. Assist in the maintenance of the bus fleet to ensure all buses are clean and ready to go at a moment's notice.

  11. Maintain a clean, organized and safe environment throughout all program areas including closets and other storage units.
  12. Maintain continuing education credits (STARS) required by state licensing for child care programs.

 

In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities, the Camp/Afterschool Program Director will:

  • Pursue/participate in ongoing camp training
  • Assist in fund-raising activities, special events and participate in the annual campaign.
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Recruit, train, supervise, mentor and conduct performance reviews of non-exempt and part-time program staff.
  • Assist in the communication, distribution and scholarshipping of program information and analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of program delivery and results.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Develop and monitor program budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Pursue /participate in ongoing program and management training and attend weekly staff meetings

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and switch tasks as new challenges and projects emerge.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. At least 21 years of age.
  2. Alarm/Emergency Procedures training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.
  3. CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.
  4. New Employee Orientation within 90 days of hire.
  5. Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or have experience in a related field.
  6. Basic computer and mathematical skills for program development, management and appraisal.
  7. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  8. Ability to solve practical problems and work through situations of varying gravity.
  9. A valid CDL with airbrake endorsement or the ability to attain one within the first year.
