This program pays at least minimum wage for your province. The summer employment length is 7-16 weeks between the beginning of May and beginning of September. 

Students at a post-secondary institution are welcomed and encouraged to apply for this position as part of a program’s requirements for a co-op or work placement.

As a Department Manager, you will oversee and be responsible for all operations and staff within the Marketing and Communications department. The Marketing and Communications department includes Marketing and Communications Coordinators and Social Media Coordinators. The Department Manager will take part in hiring and onboarding processes for their prospective staff, including training and orientation, and will be responsible for scheduling, guiding, and supporting the department’s work and goals. Department Managers and Program Administrators will also meet at least weekly at a company Leadership meeting, and will take part in leading company-wide staff meetings. Each Department Manager will report directly to Corporate Services, including the Managing Director and other members of the Leadership Team.

 

The Marketing and Communications department will perform marketing, communications and public relations duties for The Co-op. The Marketing and Communications Coordinators are knowledgeable on aspects of The Co-op, including brand image, brand identity, and funder-required social media usage, in order to facilitate the external-facing requirements of the organization. They develop all external-facing communications, including press releases and social media posts, ensuring that they align with the objectives and requirements of The Co-op. The Marketing and Communications Coordinators work closely with Social Media Coordinators to ensure our social media presence meets The Co-op’s objectives. Marketing and Communications Coordinators also engage in grant writing activities. 

 

Due to federal funding requirements for this program, successful applicants must be:

  • 15–30 years of age on their first day of work

  • A Canadian citizen, have a permanent resident card, or be protected under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (there is no requirement to be a student) 

  • Residing in Canada during the length of the employment.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the operations of the Marketing and Communications department in consultation with Corporate Services and other members of the Leadership Team

  • Establish administrative procedures to meet objectives set by the Board of Directors and the Leadership Team

  • Work with staff engaged in providing records management, finance, human resources or other administrative services

  • Draft communications materials and proposals as needed

  • Develop, implement and evaluate public relations strategies and programs designed to inform stakeholders, employees and the general public of initiatives and policies of businesses, governments and other organizations

  • Arrange and promote interviews, news conferences and other media events

  • Act as spokesperson for the organization and answer written and oral inquiries

  • Coordinate special publicity events and promotions for internal and external audiences

  • In coordination with the Social Media Coordinators, maintain social media accounts, including managing reviews and testimonials, and responding to comments

  • Support Corporate Services in the organization and maintenance of multiple grant writing projects

  • Prepare or oversee preparation of reports, briefs, speeches, presentations, and press releases

  • Plan, administer and control budgets for contracts, equipment and supplies

  • Prepare reports and briefs for management committees 

  • Cooperate with HR to interview, hire, onboard and oversee training for staff

  • Communicate job expectations to staff

  • Ensure company goals and objectives are being met by each employee and provide feedback

  • Motivate and inspire staff and facilitate personal growth through team and individual activities and goal-setting

  • Attend regular meetings with other leaders, including the Managing Director, to plan and address company and programming needs

  • Approve timesheets and time off requests for staff under their supervision

  • Set strategic long and short-term departmental goals and evaluate outcomes

  • Foster a productive work environment

  • Ensure adherence to company and industry regulations

  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by management

 

Education/experience requirements:

  • The ideal candidate will possess or be nearing completion of a post-secondary or post-graduate program in Business Administration; or possess equivalent work experience and knowledge. 

  • The ideal candidate will have one to three years of experience as a manager, supervisor, or leader (including, but not limited to, peer mentors, camp counsellors, instructors, etc.). 

  • Experience and familiarity with membership-based organizations is an asset.

  • Experience creating and implementing strategies for an online work environment is an asset.

    • Online communications platforms (Slack, Discord, Zoom, etc.)

 

The Co-op seeks individuals who enjoy collaboration, creativity, learning new skills, and engaging with artists and the community. This position may involve working some evenings and weekends as needed for special events and items needed on an urgent basis.  

As part of your application, you must submit a portfolio of your relevant skills and areas of expertise. This could include a professional portfolio, your past freelance projects, or school assignments. Please utilize Google Drive, Dropbox, or equivalent platform to link these files, and ensure that application screeners will be able to open the files without needing to log into that platform. Files submitted as part of your portfolio will be kept confidential and unpublished.

Additional Information

Membership is not required to participate in the competition for this position, and no preference is given to existing members in our ranking process, however, upon acceptance of an employment contract, all employees are required to join the co-operative.
