About us

The GVFB provides assistance to approximately 8,500 people monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore. We also provide food support to more than 90 community agencies such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week, including people who are homeless.

Our mission is providing healthy food to those in need. Our vision is to create healthy communities through fair and effective food systems. Currently, the GVFB receives, purchases, and distributes 5M lbs of food each year.

Position overview

This position will suit a highly motivated Accountant to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank’s (GVFB) day-to-day finance and accounting operations. Reporting to the Controller, this role will ensure that general ledger accounts are reconciled and reporting requirements are fulfilled accurately and on time.

You will combine your excellent analytical skills with your knowledge of accounting principles to ensure accuracy and effectiveness in all accounting tasks and processes. You are passionate about problem-solving, are process and detail-oriented with a drive to achieve results. This position will not only be involved with accounting, but will interact closely with other departments to support the GVFB’s needs and look for ways to innovate and improve the way we do business. 

Currently this position is based working in the office 3 days a week and working from home 2 days a week. 

Key responsibilities

  • Preparing Accounts Payables and performing Payment Runs (cheques and electronic payments);
  • Preparing Bank Deposits and making Online Deposits;
  • Reconciling Bank and Credit Card Statements;
  • Reconciling Petty Cash, Gift Card inventory and Food Donation records;
  • Reconciling Donations Software (Raiser’s Edge) Data to Donor/Merchant Reports and the Accounting Software (Financial Edge);
  • Maintaining Accounting Schedules such as Accruals;
  • Assist with month-end and fiscal-year end preparations and reports (filing, reconciliation, working with Excel spreadsheets, etc.);
  • Assisting with the Year-End Audit Process;
  • Assisting the Controller with other ad-hoc projects.

  • Ability to deal with questions and requests from employees and vendors in a helpful and professional manner;
  • Meticulous attention to detail;
  • Strong work ethic;
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload;
  • Ability to work independently and as strong team member.

Qualifications and experience

  • Knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping terminology and practices;
  • Completion of an Accounting program (at the college or University level);
  • Business administration skills;
  • Strong working knowledge of any computerized accounting system and the Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel spreadsheets and formulas;
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud’s Financial Edge NXT and Raiser’s Edge software advantageous;
  • Prior full-cycle accounting experience.
  • Previous experience working in a not for profit organization is an asset.
