Staff Accountant, Co-op

Job Purpose
Reporting to the assigned Manager, who will serve as the mentor, the Staff Accountant, Co-op is responsible for completing a Co-op work term to enhance their knowledge and experience in Public Accounting. The Staff Accountant, Co-op will learn, prepare, and deliver a wide range of public accounting services to a variety of clients while partnering with their mentor and other senior accounting staff. Preparing corporate and personal files and the related tax returns will be the main focus of the Staff Accountant, Co-op.  This position requires a student with a strong attention to detail, clear and effective communication skills, and a passion to learn and grow within a dynamic team.

Joining HGA in the Staff Accountant, Co-op position will provide students with an enriching accounting experience and an exposure to a variety of tasks set to launch their accounting career into overdrive. Providing meaningful opportunities to encourage growth within our HGA Team is our main priority.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

·         Preparing Notice to Reader and Review engagement files, financial statements, corporate income tax returns, year-end closing and reporting, and government reporting (i.e. quarterly GST remittances)

·         Preparing personal income tax returns

·         Preparing T4's, T5's, personal income tax returns, and other tax returns and schedules, as required

·         Supporting and learning income tax planning for companies and individuals

·         Maintaining client files to ensure accurate and timely completion of returns and schedules

·         Performing variance analyses and preparing account reconciliations

·         Other ad hoc projects as required

·         Conducting any and all other duties assigned

Qualifications
Education & Experience:

·         Working towards a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (i.e., BCom., BBA., etc.)

·         Current student in good standing - transcripts will be required

·         Enrolled in the Co-op program at your post-secondary institution

·         Working towards the prerequisites for admission into the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP)

·         Public practice or accounting experience would be considered an asset, but not required 


Skills & Knowledge:

·         Strong computer skills (Especially Microsoft Office)

·         Strong time management skills

·         Experience & education in Caseware and Profile is an asset, but not required
