Educator, BEE SMART Summer Program

Living Classrooms Foundation at Masonville Cove is hiring a team of educators for a cross-curricular summer program entitled Baltimore Environmental Education Summer Math And Reading Trailblazers (BEE SMART). These individuals will have the unique job of using STEM-based curriculum as a vehicle to improve the overall literacy of program participants. Each Educator will specialize in either Science, Math, or Literacy instruction during morning station rotations. In addition, educators will be asked to lead recreation activities, service earning project(s), presentations of learning, and morning check-ins with a group of mentees that emphasizes the programs character goals. The training prior to the program start date will equip Educators with necessary skills and certifications, and is therefore required.

Training Dates: June 26th & June 29th – July 2nd
Program Dates: July 6th through August 7th, Mon – Thurs*
Student Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8:30am – 3:00pm
Educator Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8:00am – 4:00pm
*There will be a special Friday field trip, and two evening family events


Primary Responsibilities
1. Adjust and implement existing lesson plans, as provided by Living Classrooms Foundation
2. Create new lessons as necessary
3. Ensure that lesson materials are prepared before students arrive each day
4. Research and become familiar with background information relevant to lessons
5. Collaborate with BEE SMART Director, Site Manager, other Educators, Reading Specialist, Bilingual
Parent Liaison, and Youth Specialist throughout the program to ensure cohesive student services
6. Provide good behavior management by holding students accountable for actions as well
as demonstrating consistent and creative use of positive reinforcement techniques
Coordinated Responsibilities
1. Actively engage and participate in provided Professional Development opportunities
2. Assist in the planning and implementation of evening Family Engagement workshops, as requested
3. Coach individual participants and small groups on presentations of learning, and independent reading
and writing assignments as requested by the Reading Specialist during afternoon literacy time
4. Utilize the advice of the Reading Specialist in addressing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) of
participating students, as necessary
5. Accommodate, or seek assistance in accommodating, students for whom English is a 2nd language
6. Log student attendance and other relevant notes, and report daily findings to Site Manager
7. Travel to various program sites located in South Baltimore, occasionally more than one per day
8. Notify Site Manager and/or Director, immediately of any emergency or 1st aid occurrence and log the
incident using a Living Classrooms Incident Report Form, as soon as possible
9. Distribute and collect qualitative surveys upon request
10. Remain on site during lunch and supervise students as needed
11. Assist with routine upkeep of program teaching spaces
12. Circulate and present program information to students, families, and teachers, as requested
13. Other duties as assigned

  • Bachelor's degree (obtained or in progress) in a related field (e.g. Education, Science, ELA or Math)
  • At least one year experience as an Educator (formal or informal)
  • Direct experience with 2nd through 5th grade students
