St. James Parish is hiring Mobile Equipment Mechanic II for the Fleet Division under the Operations Department. 

JOB FUNCTION:  To maintain, repair and overhaul light and heavy mobile equipment. This position concerns the independent performance of complete overhauls to major components such as engines, transmissions, and differentials, etc. This position is classified as essential during declared emergencies or natural disasters. This is a non-exempt position, forty hours per week. This position is “Safety Sensitive” and subject to random drug testing. Individuals in this position are able to complete their duties and responsibilities without supervision. Thais job requires that the employee supply all hand tools.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Includes any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Performs the full range of repair, maintenance, and overhaul of all systems including major components and assemblies such as engines (gasoline and diesel), transmissions, differentials, hydraulics, etc.
  • Locates cause of malfunction through listening and visual inspection, and the use of a wide range of test equipment.
  • Makes Regular maintenance checks and performs regular preventive maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, filter and radiator hose changes, and proper fluid level maintenance.
  • Determines nature of repair required, prepares cost estimate, and performs the repair.
  • Hooks up fuel, hydraulic, oil, and electrical systems and makes adjustments to assure proper operation.
  • Locates worn, dirty, or poorly adjusted parts through visual and listening inspection or use of test equipment.
  • Makes repairs by cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems.
  • Performs tune-ups on engines (gasoline and diesel).
  • Makes repairs and maintenance of equipment powered by small internal combustion engines such as: lawnmowers, string trimmers, and outboard motors, etc.
  • Performs as a primary trainer for entry level diesel mechanics.
  • Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning.
  • Maintains vehicle and equipment records with fleet management.
  • Orders parts as needed.
  • Completes purchase requisitions and submits for approval.
  • Responsible for housekeeping.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Estimates labor and materials necessary to accomplish repairs as needed.
  • Maintains equipment by washing and cleaning
  • Other Duties as assigned

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Supervises crew and general maintenance or other employees assisting in specific work-related tasks

 OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

·         Knowledge of the operating procedures and maintenance of equipment.

·         General knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations in equipment operation.

·         Working Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.

·         Ability to perform physical labor required of the position.

 EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:  High School diploma or general education diploma (GED) and experience in the building construction trades or general building maintenance.

 MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to define common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: “Must” possess a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and/or ability to obtain with a class “B” designation and have an acceptable driving record.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, feel objects, tools, controls, and climb or balance.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, extreme heat/cold, near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to vibration.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places.

 The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
