SUMMARY: Performs dental measures designed to preserve teeth and prevent the spread of oral disease by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Cleans and removes calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums.
  • Feels lymph nodes under patient's chin and jaw line to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer or other diseases.
  • Feels and visually inspect the oral cavity for sores and signs of disease.
  • Probes and examines gums to locate periodontal disease, recessed gums and signs of gum disease.
  • Applies fluorides and other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay.
  • Charts conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist.
  • Exposes and develops intra-oral and extra-oral dental radiographs.
  • Makes impressions for study casts.
  • Removes sutures (excluding wire sutures) or dressings.
  • Administers topical anesthetic agents (excluding aerosol type)
  • Places and removes with hand instruments only temporary restorations.
  • Removes excess cement from around permanent dental restorations and orthodontic appliances.
  • Assists in the administration of inhalation analgesia (nitrous oxide).
  • Applies pit and fissure sealants after pre and post placement examination by dentist.
  • Provides clinical services and health education to improve and maintain oral health of school children.
  • Polishes completed restorations
  • Performs roots planning and gingival curettage procedures.
  • Conducts dental health clinics for community groups to augment services of dentist.

EDUCATION:

Must be graduate of state approved licensed dental hygienist program.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION:

Licensure from the state of Alabama
