Position Overview
Reporting to the Cleaning Manager, the Facility Cleaning Coordinator plays an important role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for members, visitors, and staff. This role involves daily cleaning and maintenance duties both inside and outside the facility, including entrances and exterior walkways.
The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-focused, and committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness that support health, safety, and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities
Delivery of the Y Way quality standards by ensuring a welcoming, inclusive, and positive participant experience. Includes general cleaning and maintenance tasks inside and outside the building, providing a clean and organized environment that promotes health and wellness.
Operational duties include executing and monitoring daily cleaning schedules to ensure all YMCA spaces meet cleanliness and safety standards. Inspect facilities regularly, report or resolve maintenance issues where applicable with support from the Cleaning Manager. Ensure all public and shared spaces (washrooms, lobbies, studios, counters, equipment, etc.) are clean and organized. Replenish and label cleaning supplies as needed, ensuring safe and proper use. Support procurement and inventory processes by tracking supply use and notifying when restocking is required. Support the Cleaning Manager in ordering and receiving supplies for cleaning and locker room areas.
Team leadership and support includes coordinating daily cleaning assignments for staff and volunteers. Provide on-the-job guidance and ensure adherence to YMCA cleaning procedures and safety standards. Track attendance, performance, and operational concerns and report to the Cleaning Manager. Foster a respectful and inclusive work environment aligned with YMCA values. Support recruitment and training of new cleaning staff and volunteers as per YMCA procedures.
Facility cleaning support includes sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, garbage collection, and restocking supplies. Perform laundry tasks such as collecting, washing, folding, and distributing towels. Supervise the maintenance of cleaning closets and equipment across facilities. Support readiness of rooms and spaces for programs, events, or rentals as scheduled.
Follow all health and safety guidelines to maintain a clean and safe environment. Ensure cleaning chemicals are used safely and according to manufacturer instructions. Maintain checklists and logs of completed cleaning tasks, inspections, and supply usage. Support emergency procedures and child safeguarding processes. Adhere to YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth policies and procedures, including safety protocols.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Skills Qualifications
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety
- Ability to lift and move cleaning equipment and supplies as needed
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overnight, weekends, and holidays
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safe handling practices is an asset
- Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, bending, and lifting
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Eligibility
This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and is open to applicants between the ages of 15 and 30, in accordance with program requirements.
