Development Director

Reports to:  Vice President Development



Develop and implement a fundraising plan focused on major gifts for the organization to meet operating and capital budget needs on an annual basis as well as long term. This role will strategically expand the organization’s major gift and planned giving programs with a goal of significantly increasing the base of annual donors who give more than $10,000 on an annual basis.  Conduct face-to-face solicitations involving Club leadership and key volunteers, as appropriate.  Responsible for meeting annual revenue targets and working directly with the VP of Development to develop and execute a comprehensive major gift strategy.


Key Roles:


  1. Provide direction and oversight in all areas related to reaching development goals and strategies with primary focus on individual giving.

  2. Work closely with Development Committee, Board of Directors and Advisory Councils (2-3) to identify major gift prospects.


Strategic Planning

  1. Research and develop a comprehensive plan for achieving operational and capital needs of the organization through major gifts.

  2. Research and identify individual prospects to cultivate, solicit, and steward.

  3. Create annual recognition and stewardship plan for individuals and major donors including recognition events, print materials and ongoing communication.


Areas of Responsibility

  1. Actively manage a portfolio of 100 – 150 major gift prospects including research, strategy oversight, proposal development and writing, coordination of follow-up to secure gift and stewardship activities.

  2. Lead the implementation of Advancing Philanthropy, a comprehensive strategy and program with a focus on individual giving and board support.

  3. Stewardship planning and implementation

  4. Develop and implement Major Gift Society for $10,000+ annual donors

  5. Manage Annual Fund planning and implementation

  6. Create Planned Giving program

  7. Maintaining relationships and contact with donors, to include plan for involving, board members and Club staff.

  8. Understand and articulate the mission, objectives, policies, programs, procedures, principles and practices of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston.

  9. Manage administrative and operational systems and duties to:

    1. Track fundraising income in Raiser’s Edge

    2. Recognize contributions with acknowledgement letters and special recognition events

  10. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or as assigned.




Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with the Club management to exchange        information, seek and give assistance, consultation and direction.  Maintains contact with financial staff and support staff. 


External: Maintain contact with community partners and corporate leaders, board and volunteers to seek financial support and provide information regarding club activities and needs.




  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • A minimum of five years proven experience in resource development – including successful major gift fundraising.

  • Experience working effectively with volunteer leaders and high profile individuals

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated track record of developing and executing successful fundraising strategies with long-term sustainability.

  • Ability to gather and analyze data.

  • Strong computer skills, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Raiser’s Edge.

  • Knowledge of how to manage multiple fundraising projects, events and campaigns

  • Goal oriented with the ability to work independently and execute successful projects
