Summer Camp Leader - Temporary Full Time
Monday to Friday I 37.5 hours per week I June 23rd to August 29
Reporting to the Manager of Humane Education, the Summer Camp Leader is responsible for facilitating engaging summer camps for children in grades 1 to 9. This role works collaboratively with the Humane Education Facilitators, Adoptions, Behavior, and Volunteer Resources & Engagement teams to provide excellent customer service and build and maintain strong relationships with members of the community by promoting the mission and values of CHS.
Summer Camp:
Camp is a place where kids connect with you, each other, and the animals. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for children to interact and learn about the animals that share our world in fun and safe ways. Through our camps, children will have enriching experiences filled with hands-on crafts, fun activities, and some animal interactions as well! As they have fun, campers learn respect, compassion, and how to provide a lifetime of care for companion animals.
Duties:
· Plan and facilitate fun and engaging camps with presentations, tours, crafts, games and activities for children and youth
· Work with your co-leader, volunteers, and other group leaders to co-ordinate games, activities, and locations, as well as making sure your group arrives on-time for all presentations/activities
· Educate children and youth about animal welfare, domestic and wild animals, how an animal shelter operates, proper companion animal care, husbandry, and how to interact with animals in a humane way
· Prior to campers’ arrival, set up the Learning Center, collect supplies for crafts and games, and select appropriate animal guests that will be visiting with the group that day
· Upkeep the Learning Centre ensuring cleanliness and supplies are stocked before, during and after each day
· At the end of the day, re-set the Learning Center for the next day and caring for the children in aftercare
· Communicate with the Humane Education staff to trouble shoot any issues as they arise
· Engage with parents during sign in and sign out by providing information about Calgary Humane Society programs and initiatives including special events, volunteering, animals available for adoption, directions to public areas, and any feedback about their child from the day
· Aid in tracking inventory and supplies used for each camp
· Promote a culture of volunteer engagement by building and maintaining relationships with the Summer Camp volunteers, including participating in volunteer recognition and teamwork
· Champion CHS values of compassion, courage, commitment, and collaboration in your everyday work as well as promoting organizational values in order to achieve the overall mission and vision of the organization
· Maintain a culture of positivity and openness through face-to-face communication, active listening, and collaboration
· Administer basic first aid as needed
· Assist in other areas of the shelter on an as-needed basis, including cleaning, feeding, and enrichment of shelter animals.
Summer Job Requirements:
Calgary Humane Society summer jobs are subsidized through the Canada Summer Jobs program which offers wage subsidies to support employers to create quality summer work experiences for youth aged 15 to 30 years.
To be eligible for this position under the Canada Summer Jobs Program, candidates must meet the position requirements as well as be:
· between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
· Canadian citizens,
permanent residents, or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred
under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally
entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial
legislation and regulations.
· International students are not eligible.
Position Requirements:
· Minimum high school diploma.
· Minimum of one year of professional or volunteer work experience.
· Experience working with children in an educational setting considered an asset.
· Ability to commit to the full duration of the term of the position.
· Current First Aid and CPR/AED Level C certificate achieved prior to start date
· Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to approach sensitive and emotional situations using a flexible, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach.
· Genuine interest in the welfare of animals and people and values congruent with the organization.
· Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
· Dependable, reliable, and dedicated to completing assigned tasks and meeting deadlines while also demonstrating adaptability to changing priorities and work assignments.
· Self-motivated with strong problem-solving and teamwork skills.
· Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
· Successful candidate will be required to complete a police information check at their own expense to be arranged by CHS.
· Physically capable of, and comfortable handling a variety of species including but not limited to cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and small critters.
Hourly Rate:
· $17.00 + 6% Vacation Pay
