Under the general supervision of the Unit Director and with the authority of the Chief Nursing Officer, nurses deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with established philosophy.

Provides direct patient care to labor/delivery/recovery/immediate postpartum, mother-baby couplets, gynecologic, and pediatric patients in a family-centered approach in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the healthcare organization, as well as guidelines of professional organizations.

Oversees and directs the care of pregnant women and their families.  Provides care to low-risk pregnant women and their families.

Oversees and directs the care of mother-baby couplets, gynecology, and pediatric patients and their families.

 Nurses caring for mother-baby couplets will educate and assist new mothers with physical and emotional needs during the postpartum perIOd, while in the hospital setting. They perform the dual role of caring for the infants and educating mothers about care.

 Responsible for the care of pregnant patients and their families in antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.  In addition, the obstetric RN cares for patients during vaginal and/or cesarean delivery.

 Responsible for the care of women and children and their families as well as overseeing and directing assistive personnel, and maintaining final accountability for the care given to assigned patients.

 Serves as the primary nurse leading the collaboration of all disciplines for well-coordinated, high quality, safe patient care.  

 Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, education, safety and related criteria for the newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric population.

 When the need arises, this nurse will perform other duties within the scope of practice as assigned by his or her supervisor.

WORK HOURS:Generally 12 hour shifts.  Days or nights dependent upon assignment, rotating holidays and weekends, or as needed as required to meet patient care needs.


 EDUCATION - Graduate of an accredited school preparing Registered Nurses, BSN preferred.

 LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION - Current Louisiana Licensure as a Registered Nurse required, BLS (CPR) upon hire, NRP certification within 6 months of employment, ACLS certification within 1 year post hire for those providing post-operative care, PALS certification preferred within 1 year post hire of employment, Fetal Heart Monitoring Education, Completion of  AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring Education Program by 6 months of hire for an RN with previous fetal heart monitoring experience and by one (1) year of hire of an RN with no fetal heart monitoring experience into a labor & delivery role.

 EXPERIENCE -   At least one year of nursing experience in maternal child, emergency or critical care is preferred.

  • Performs a complete nursing assessment with a special focus on the adaptation to mother-baby dyad and transition to parenthood to establish and prioritize nursing diagnoses to create an individualized, evidence-based plan of care.
  • Assess human responses and adaptation to actual or potential health problems of the maternal, newborn, pediatric and gynecologic patient, family, and/or significant other.
  • Provides patient-centered care to address physical, spiritual, psychosocial, developmental, cultural, and educational needs of the mothers, newborns, and pediatric patients and designated family members in accordance with the plan of care, hospital policy, state and national regulations and recommendations, and guidelines of the professional organizations.
  • Recognizes current and emerging high-risk obstetrical conditions and emergencies in order to respond timely and appropriately to provide the highest quality care for the mothers and newborns.
  • Stabilizes the high-risk maternal, newborn, or pediatric patients for transport as appropriate.
  • Manages nursing care for obstetrical patients with common complications of the perinatal period.
  • Administers high-risk medications in accordance with established protocols, policies and procedures to obstetrical patients to promote optimal maternal newborn outcomes.
  • Supports the mothers and newborns with breastfeeding by providing education and support.
  • Identifies patient and family education needs and in collaboration with other disciplines initiates’ education needs according to the age of the patient.
  • Provides appropriate referrals and individualized information regarding post-discharge community resources
  • Communicates with patients, families, and multidisciplinary team members, both verbally and in writing, to enhance teamwork and promote safety, security, and improved maternal newborn, gynecologic and pediatric outcomes.
  • Delegates nursing care to licensed and unlicensed staff based on the staff member’s knowledge, education, competency and ability to successfully perform the task/assignment.
  • Participates in discharge planning; provides instruction to patient/family.
  • Maintains and promotes professional standards and development by participating in in-services, committees, staff meetings and department and hospital performance improvement activities.
  • Participates as an interprofessional team member in performance improvement activities to create and promote a culture of safety.
  • Assures that rights to privacy, security, and confidentiality are maintained for patients, employees, physicians, and all customers.
  • Functions as a positive role model for peers and promotes a professional image of Iberia Medical Center.  Consistently lives by IMC’s standards of performance
