JOB SUMMARY:
The Charge Nurse will be responsible for planning, organizing and carrying out nursing care of our residents. Responsibilities include orientating, instructing and supervising our CNAs, CMAs and resident care specialists. The Charge Nurse complies with established policies and procedures and performs professional nursing duties within scope of licensure.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Gives and receives report. Updates assignment sheets for CNAs, CMAs and resident care specialists
· Carries out or assigns nursing duties to other personnel
· Contacts physicians as needed for change in condition of resident
· Informs resident and families of new physician order(s) and changes in Plan of Care within mandated time frame
· Keeps DON, ADON and evening shift supervisor informed of resident status and other pertinent matters
· Admits and orients new resident and involves family with orientation
· Checks physician’s orders, transfer forms and pre-admission information; reviews resident’s medical and social history; completes admissions and documentation forms; ensures residents supplies and medications are ordered and equipment is working properly
· Maintains proper documentation of facility records, i.e., narcotic records, medical chart forms, weekly skin assessment and update wound pictures weekly
· Maintains daily, weekly or monthly weight and vital signs and informs DON, ADON and On Call Manager of any changes
· Discharges residents to the community or other facilities. Contacts family prior to any transfers to hospital and ensures resident is escorted to transportation or transfer vehicle, completes required forms/documentation
· Performs, supervises or assists with resident’s care according to policies and procedures. Assigns CNA, CMA or resident care specialist to daily routines and check all staff charting is complete every shift
· Prepares and administers medications and treatments as prescribed. Authorizes, evaluates and co-signs PRN meds given by CMA, completes follow-up documentation on all PRN’s given and responsible for narcotic count at each shift change
· Makes independent decisions regarding nursing care.
· Examines and gives emergency treatment to residents and/or personnel involved in accidents, notifies physician/family and DON, ADON or ON Call Manager and completes investigation report
· Accompanies physician on rounds and assists with examinations and treatments
· Encourages participation of all staff in the overall Plan of Care for each resident
REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate of an approved school of nursing for RN/LPN
Current nursing license in good standing in the state of Iowa
Current CPR certification preferred or obtained within 30 days of hire
One year of experience in a geriatric setting preferred
Supervisory course for LPN required
Knowledgeable with current changes in nursing practice
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Able to read, write, speak and understand the English language
