Title: Vice President, Atlantic YMCA Regional Development Centre

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer, Atlantic YMCA Regional Development Centre and YMCA Greater Halifax/Dartmouth

Position Status: Full Time, Salaried

Location: Within Atlantic Canada, ability to travel to Halifax frequently

Salary: Commensurate with Experience

All YMCAs are Not for Profit Charities that rely on a partnership between staff, volunteers, and donors to fulfill its vision of creating healthy and well communities.


The Opportunity

As part of the YMCA Canada Federation Development Network, the RDC supports 11 Atlantic Canadian YMCA Member Associations in Nova Scotia (5), New Brunswick (3), and Newfoundland and Labrador (3).  The RDC VP works collaboratively with the other YMCA RDC’s, YMCA Canada and National YMCA bodies to resource initiatives, service requests and outlined duties and responsibilities.

Reporting to the CEO, the VP will work closely with the Atlantic Associations and the Ontario YMCA Regional Development Centre in these areas of work:

  • Strategic alignment to YMCA Canada’s Bridging Strategy that includes Pandemic Response, Reset, Reimagining, and the Next Normal.
  • Association support and development including, but not limited to, CEO selection, Crisis Identification and support, Association Reviews, Strategic Planning, and Governance support.
  • Act as project manager in a newly adapted Federation Association Review process for at-risk Associations requiring targeted support.
  • Intentional coordination of networks and work groups to support YMCA collaboration and joint Provincial or Atlantic Canadian initiatives.
  • Support Associations in planning for long-term sustainability through improved financial reporting, operational and capital planning/modeling, and risk management.
  • Brokering of shared services, regional delivery models and YMCA amalgamations to support sustainable program delivery for more people in Atlantic Canada.
  • Strengthen collaboration of Associations that builds capacity to strengthen YMCA performance and sustainability.
  • Provincial external relations, public policy, advocacy; in alignment with the National YMCA work.
  • Championing YMCA program quality standards.
  • Development, alignment, and implementation of the Atlantic YMCA RDC work plan focused on association recovery, renewal and sustainability, YMCA Collaboration and furthering the collective purpose.
  • Facilitation of information sharing, staff and volunteer training and development.

Experience & Qualifications

  • University degree in a related field required, combined with some postgraduate or executive development educational pursuits.
  • Knowledge of the YMCA, its mission and impact; YMCA experience as a key staff or volunteer leader preferred.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills, uses time and available resources to maximum effect.
  • A track record of comfort and efficacy in the Board room and knowledge of governance best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitation and collaborative leadership that brings people together to achieve a common purpose and goal achievement.
  • Experience in dealing with external relations and public policy.
  • A resource mobilizer who seeks to harness human talent and financial resources to achieve goals.
  • Always respectful, can communicate honestly with clarity and openness even when information being communicated is difficult and the audience may not initially be receptive.
  • Accelerates change, questions and is willing to disrupt the status quo to strengthen the YMCA.
  • Understands communities, issues, and populations in Atlantic Canada.
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity.
  • Note: Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Check, Child Abuse Registry Check, and proof of valid First Aid and CPR training.  Employees will be required to attend YMCA Child Protection Training.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work some evenings/weekends, travel extensively in Atlantic Canada
  • Laptop, cell phone, and corporate credit card provided.
  • Combination of home office, remote work, and office space at the YMCA corporate office.
