Purpose of Position

The digital director will be responsible for all elements of digital strategy including the Roosevelt Institute and Roosevelt Forward websites, email marketing, social media, digital advertising and acquisition, and, in collaboration with the development department, digital fundraising. This newly created position will report to the vice president of communications and will have the opportunity to hire a team of two manager-level positions focused on social media, email, and website strategy and maintenance.

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in nonprofit digital communications, superior management and team-building skills, and is passionate about building a digital program that helps to drive a sea change in economics and carry a new paradigm for justice and democracy forward. 

 The digital director is a remote position or can be hybrid remote/office for New York metro area residents.

 This is a non-union role.


  • Take a lead role in defining the Roosevelt Institute’s digital communications strategy, goals, and tactical execution across platforms (desktop, mobile, tablet) and channels (web, social, email, search).
  • Hire and lead a digital team of two manager-level positions.
  • Identify opportunities for high-impact digital communications that drive web traffic, grow our followers and subscribers across channels, drive event participation, and create opportunities for engagement.
  • Drive creative thinking about and manage digital campaigns, storytelling, and engagement, including developing multimedia content, and writing compelling web content, emails, and social copy to inspire and engage key audiences.
  • Partner with media relations colleagues to amplify media coverage and increase organizational visibility.
  • Drive organizational digital strategy, assessing tech tools, campaign strategy, and collaborating with the development department on digital fundraising needs and potential.
  • Understand and apply data driven decision making to our organizational online presence, including testing, analysis, reporting, and targeting.
  • Lead an organizational culture shift to increase digital fluency and social media thought leadership among staff.
  • Develop and implement a social media influencer strategy to position the Roosevelt Institute’s content prominently in political and economic social media circles.
  • Manage selection process and oversee relationships with digital consultants handling web development, digital advertising, and digital strategy as budget allows.
  • Keep abreast of the latest trends and advancements in digital communications technology for nonprofits.
  • Serve as an advisor to the vice president of communications and the senior team in other digital communications matters as required.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum five to seven years demonstrated successful experience in digital communications including website management, email strategy, social strategy, and digital fundraising.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with CMS, CRM, and digital software tools. (Salesforce experience, Mailchimp and WordPress experience a plus).
  • Demonstrated experience leading a dynamic team, supporting professional development, effectively delegating, and project managing multiple simultaneous work-streams.
  • Significant experience in successfully managing consultant contracts.
  • Experience leading issue campaigns for an organization on a national scale.
  • Demonstrated experience in content development and persuasive writing.
  • Strong understanding of analytical tools (e.g. Google Analytics) and ability to report on metrics.
  • Familiarity with HTML and basic graphic production.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and goals of the Roosevelt Institute including economic, racial, environmental, and social justice.


  • Strong staff management, team building and mentoring skills; ability to exercise sound judgment and leadership, and to operate in a collaborative, professional, and ethical manner.
  • Outstanding communications skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to grasp and communicate substantive Roosevelt Institute policies and programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with staff at all levels, and ability to represent the Roosevelt Institute with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including ability to conduct and coordinate multiple tasks under pressure to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Resilient, resourceful, and detail-oriented, with the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
