Gardening and Environment Instructor 

Responsibilities and Administrative duties: 

  • To create engaging and meaningful lesson plans for each two-week session held throughout the academic school year and the summer program that provide opportunities for skill mastery and social and academic enrichment and follow the approved lesson plan format. 
  • Daily care and maintenance of program growing facilities and plant stock including greenhouse, vegetable, perennial and herb gardens, and compost bins. 
  • Managing the planting and caring of all Farmer's Market plants and produce. 
  • Collaborate with the Cooking Educator to grow produce that will be used during the Cooking Component. 
  • Daily care and maintenance of the BUGS Chicken Coop. 
  • Coordinating and sustaining the partnership with Ampersea Restaurant and/or their Greenhouse Manager. 
  • Collaborate with the Cooking and Nutrition Educator for attending, selling and producing items to sell at Summer Farmer’s Markets  
  • Other administrative duties to be determined

  Job Duties      

  • To provide good classroom management by holding students accountable for their behavior and usage of positive behavior management techniques including BUG BUCKS system. 
  • To assist the program and its participant in meeting all program goals including academic and social skills improvement, attendance, and family partnership. 
  • To provide teacher and student assistance in the classroom at Commodore John Rodgers Elementary school for a minimum of two hours per month. 
  • To create and maintain a positive, child-friendly classroom environment for students that is clean and safe, makes supplies accessible, is conducive to hands-on learning and maintaining daily attendance. 
  • To purchase supplies with monthly component budget, maintain monthly expense log and the BUGS Blog. 
  • To communicate with parents.  
  • To effectively lead a group of twelve students through the program day including; snack, recreation, bathroom, homework assistance and component. 
  • To participate in an overnight camping experience at Camp Puh’tok in Monkton, MD. 
  • To participate in Saturday programming such as the Annual BUGS Farmer’s Market. 

 Such other duties deemed necessary by the Program Manager or Program Director for the successful operation of the BUGS After School Program
