Working as part of the VNFC Custodial Team and reporting directly to the Shelter Manager and Building Services Manager, the Shelter Custodian carries out a variety of custodial, maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties related to maintaining a healthy, safe and clean environment for staff, clients and community.

As a Shelter Custodian, job duties include the following:

       Wash and disinfect shelter washrooms and floors, toilets/urinals. Sinks, counters, mirrors, and fixtures etc.

       Launder shelter bedding

       Perform exterior grounds duties such as cleaning ground, paved and grassy areas of debris

       Snow removal and sidewalk salting of shelter entrances

       Collects and removes garbage and recycling from shelter facilities

       Regular and consistent sanitization of surface areas in line with communicable disease protocol

       Check and replenish stock as needed

       Maintains cleaning equipment, materials, and supplies in a safe and orderly manner to ensure the safety of guests, staff, and public

       Ensure the building is properly cleaned and secured

       Possible driving coverage for client pickup and/or drop-off dependent on available hours and employee preference, and other duties as directed by Building Services Manager

 

As a member of the VNFC team, job duties include the following:

          Maintain confidentiality

          Participate in staff development, staff meetings and department meetings as required, including community and cultural events


Participate in data collection and evaluation tasks as requested


  • Familiarity and experience in Indigenous Communities

       Some knowledge of Indigenous cultures and practices including from the territory in which the work of VNFC takes place. Ability to speak about one’s own Indigenous culture, if applicable, and any communities the (prospective) employee has previously lived in or held jobs within

       Knowledge and practice of providing community-based services to Indigenous peoples using philosophies of cultural humility and cultural safety.

Communication Skills and Abilities

       Ability to read and write various correspondences such as but not limited to letters, memos etc; comprehend simple instructions and interpret various documents

       Proactive communication with management

       Effective communication with staff to ensure the building is safe for daily activities

  • Ability to multi-task while remaining composed and maintaining a professional attitude in high stress and potentially volatile situations

Program Abilities and Knowledge

·         A sound understanding of the Friendship Centre movement

·         Knowledge of WCB regulations and safe work practices

·         Knowledge of VNFC communicable disease safety procedures and protocols

·         Ability to practice using philosophies of cultural safety and humility, harm reduction, and trauma informed care.

·         Ability to spend a major portion of the workday standing, walking and/or sitting as well as bending and stretching, lifting and/or doing labour intensive work

Education

       Graduate of high school or equivalent and/or a Building Service Worker Course Certificate or equivalent

       Custodial and/or building maintenance experience of 3 years or more

Work Experience

       Preference for past experience working in an Indigenous serving organization or community setting.

Licenses and/or Certificates

       WHIMS Certificate

       First Aid certification

Other 

          Required to provide current vulnerable sector criminal record check
