York Space Systems is looking for a talented and experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer that can turn complex design requirements into an affordable-to-produce and easy-to-assemble design for high-rate production. We are seeking someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and jumps at the chance to exercise their engineering skills and loves to coach younger team members.  In this role you will have the opportunity to flex your CAD skills while advancing new philosophies for the space industry.  As a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer, you will drive best practice in tangible designs while simultaneously developing a growing and maturing team.  Aerospace specific experience is desired, but not a requirement.  

 

Responsibilities 

  • Work across systems to ensure requirements and interfaces are well understood and documented to deliver the most simplistic design while achieving the mission objectives. 

  • Engineer mechanical design solutions for both spacecraft flight hardware and mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE) Oversee the design work of younger engineers to ensure quality and best practice is implemented. 

  • Work with the structural team to ensure the appropriate level of FEA is performed to ensure robustness of a design, conducting initial high level calculations to verify dynamic and static performance of designs.   

  • Create component drawings with appropriate GD&T, that can be affordably produced, facilitate design for manufacturing and design for cost reviews to improve all designs. 

  • Develop assembly drawings, fabrication procedures, and build instructions working with the integration team.  

  • Represent the Mechanical Design team while interfacing directly with programs and the end customer at various levels of seniority and technical detail.     

  • Coordinate with test engineers to prepare and execute test plans as the ME responsible engineer while performing root cause analyses if/when errors arise.  

  • Interface with suppliers to produce designs and optimize designs for cost and lead time. 

  • Derive and manage best practices and processes to ensure the quality of the output of the ME team, including support of the implementation of PLM. 

  • Support peers through checking and collaboration to ensure best practices is implemented on all products developed within the team. 

 

Qualifications 

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.  

  • 10+ years of experience as a mechanical design engineer.  3years of experience leading and mentoring other mechanical design engineers in a technical capacity.  Experience with space vehicle design and/or ground support equipment is highly preferred.  

  • Excellent understanding of what is needed for high-quality mechanical systems.  

  • Extensive experience with configuration control, the lifecycle of a design release and PLM. 

  • Experience with materials, joints, bonding and how these choices affect designs.  A strong understanding of industry best practice and the ability to communicate such effectively. 

  • Experience with manufacturing best practices for design tolerancing, fabrication methodologies and assembly, ideally some hands-on experience. 

  • Excellent Solidworks CAD skills, experience with multiple software packages preferred. 

  • Extensive experience with model-based definition and 3D PDF generation / checking. 

  • Demonstrates self-initiated work in a team environment with strong leadership skills. 

  • 5+ years of experience in the life cycle of spacecraft (or similar) development: design, build, and test. 

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain U.S. security clearance.
