Position Summary

Capital Area Transit System (CATS) is seeking an experienced Fleet Safety Supervisor to lead fleet-safety activities focused on safe vehicle operation, operator driving performance, defensive-driving practices, preventable-accident reduction, and remedial coaching.

The Fleet Safety Supervisor conducts field observations, reviews video and vehicle-performance information, identifies unsafe driving trends, and works closely with Transportation, Maintenance, and Risk and Safety to improve operator performance and reduce preventable accidents.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct road observations, ride checks, spot checks, facility checks, and other assessments of Bus Operator driving performance.
  • Review video, telematics, customer complaints, accident/incident information, and performance trends to identify unsafe driving behaviors and areas requiring corrective action.
  • Provide safety coaching and recommend remedial training or management follow-up.
  • Recognize and reinforce safe driving practices and performance.
  • Support accident review and preventability determinations.
  • Identify recurring accident types, locations, driving behaviors, and vehicle-related factors.
  • Develop and implement targeted fleet-safety initiatives, coaching, and corrective interventions.
  • Track the effectiveness of safety interventions and report trends to the Risk and Safety Manager.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance regarding safety-related vehicle conditions, recurring defects, and road-call concerns.
  • Support safe vehicle inspection practices and operator defect-reporting requirements.
  • Escalate unresolved safety-critical fleet concerns.
  • Participate in reviews of vehicles, equipment, and technology that may affect operator or fleet safety.
  • Deliver or coordinate defensive-driving, remedial, post-accident, and refresher instruction.
  • Maintain accurate driving-observation, coaching, training, and related safety records.
  • Prepare fleet-safety performance reports and ensure consistent application of agency driving and safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial vehicle operation, public transit operations, fleet safety, transportation safety, driver training/coaching, or a closely related field.
  • Experience operating commercial or transit vehicles and evaluating safe driving practices.
  • Working knowledge of defensive driving, accident prevention, commercial/transit vehicle operations, and safe vehicle-operating practices.
  • Experience conducting or participating in driving observations, accident reviews, safety assessments, operator coaching, or remedial instruction.
  • Ability to review and interpret video, telematics, incident information, and driving-performance data.
  • Strong communication, coaching, documentation, judgment, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, or ability to meet applicable CATS CDL requirements for the position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Public transit or fixed-route bus operations experience.
  • Previous fleet-safety, transit-safety, supervisory, driver-instructor, or training experience.
  • Experience conducting preventability reviews or post-accident assessments.
  • Experience using onboard video, telematics, or other driver-performance monitoring systems.
  • Instructor, defensive-driving, transit-safety, or related professional certification.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to work variable shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to observe service across operating periods.
  • Ability to respond to significant fleet-safety events as operational needs require.
  • Ability to work aboard transit vehicles and in field and outdoor environments.
